OK... I am rebuilding a pair I found in a warehouse! No way I can find the serial numbers- they are barely there. The crossovers are the 'Type AA'. I think they are fromthe 70's ???
What can I do to make them better? One woofer has been reconed in 1991, the other appears to be original. Should I recone them both?
I am removing the existing paint job (brown) only to find silver underneath. I am going to repaint them satin black. A bit scruffed up, but they will be fine. One does not have a bottom, but I will replace both of them. I have removed all speakers and have cleaned them, including removing the brown spray paint- now the horns are down to the aluminum!
I have also heard people say that there may be several easy mods that cost next to nothing. Any proven ideas are worth considering!
Follow Ups:
I discarded the Klipsch crossovers, built new ones (MIT caps, OFHC air core inductors & Kimber internal wiring, added a notch filter & zobel filter), plus damping absorption at sides of woofer box, clay damping of midrange horn exterior. Result: vastly improved soundstage, very smooth midrange, clearer imageing. Cost: about $500 in parts.Gardiner

For internal wiring I used Kimber TCX for the midrange & tweeter & stripped down Audioquest Midnight for the bass, and TCX for the point to point wiring in the crossovers. TCX is a teflon insulated single bundle of 15ga uninsulated 5/9 copper wires. The Audioquest is 24 strand solid core litz, spiral wrapped around a large core. I removed 12 strands and twisted them into a cable for the connection from crossover to woofer.I built each crossover in 2 sections, 1 for bass and 1 for midrange/treble, with separate speaker connectors. Then I biwired with Kimber 4TC from Welbourne Laurel 300B amps.
Hope this helps,

The AA network is probably the best stock crossover for LaS. For a nice cheap mod, try wrapping the horns with Mortite rope caulk, or scrap Bituthene roofing material. If that seems too cheap you can always spend a little and use dynamat. For tweaks & mods without end go to the Klipsch bulletin board at http://216.37.9.50/cgi-bin/ubb/Ultimate.cgi
