Which of your systems will be blessed with the new arrival?--Jim
Let us know which titles you're enjoying. It's nice to get "fresh" perspective again.
I have bought many SACD's sight unheard. As there are currently bargains, at Tower and Crutchfield, blow the bank. They don't spoil. I have only bought one SACD that I was sorry I bought, that I can remember. Some native music. But search here, stay away from those inmate reviews who love everything on SACD, and buy now, before they are all gone.
It is obvious that Crutchfield is giving up on SACD software. They have just nine titles, and many are very cheap. In addition to bargains cited in the subject of this post, Leonard Bernstein and Journey single-layer SACDs are just $9.99. Now, Crutchfield never had a very good selection of SACDs, but the fact that they only have nine titles, coupled with the low prices, is a good indicator that they have stopped carrying software. Of course, hardware is their business.
There are about 10 SACDs I want to pick up - but can't bring myself to paying the high prices.
exactly. I can't believe anyone would read anything into Crutchfield discontinuing SACD sales. They don't sell software! They sell hardware! Crutchfield is going to compete with Tower, CDNow, HMV, etc. for Internet/catalog cd/sacd sales? How about this as an alternative/half-full argument:
SACD is a new format. Crutchfield sells SACD players. SACDs were not available at retailers. In the interest of supporting hardware sales, Crutchfield decides to stock a few discs. Eventually, software becomes more widely available, there is no reason for them to continue to stock discs.
Is there anyone here who was ever thought - I wonder if Crutchfield has the new xxx disc?
8 times.
Why do you have to snibble at my posts? Why can't you read them and walk away?
Because you are in a word, nuts. That's why you got booted off the other list. Too "advisoral".
I've never been booted off of any list. I wouldn't place much stock in anything else Maven says. As for my "promise" to Chris, you're referring to a cooling off period he asked us to honor several months ago. It was a good idea. I bear no grudge against you. I just think some of your ideas are wrong, and I'm entitled to say so, as long as it's not a personal attack on you.If you disagree with me, you're entitled to do the same, but if 90 days ago you said SACD was dead in 60 days, and during that time it was announced that 20+ Stones titles were being released on hybrid SACD, a new SACD production plant was under construction, and new software and hardware was in development, it's difficult to see how you could consider you were "right".
Hmmm.Your credibility is suspect, not mine.
Interesting that my name came up, however.
No, it was not interesting in the least that your name came up.
Well you are the one who brought it up.
And thanks for confirming that you don't know what you're talking about.
You said:"I've never been booted off of any list. I wouldn't place much stock in anything else Maven says."
You don't even know that you brought my name up??!!??!??
We were discussing your BS from a previous thread in which you falsely stated I had been kicked off the SH board. DUI brought it up, not me. And you were the one who originally introduced the information to the board. Now STFU and discuss high res digital audio or GTF off the board.
Not that it ultimately matters much what we post, in the scheme of things.
SACD/CD hybrids will BE the CD. CD only discs aren't going to be manufactured in the future.
.
it was simply denied. Why tip your hand a year or two early?Facts? Who needs facts? The strategy is obvious. It's already being followed by some of the small audiophile labels. The larger labels with follow when it is possible to produce these discs in huge numbers. Did you notice that the Stones releases won't be available on a CD only disc? The future is already here, at least in miniature.
The more SACD/CD hybrids that I acquire, means all the more likely I am to buy a good SACD player (blng, bling!!).
It does however in the classroom, laboratory - and the boardroom. :)
..technology marches on. Just as the 5-1/4 floppy gave way to the 3-1/2, which gave way to the cdr, so will the cd go. The higher storage capacity will obsolete the cd (and cdr) just as surely. Besides the copy-protection benefits SACD and DVDA bring to the table. IMHO.And stating one's opinion doesn't make him a moron. He is entitled to state his case just as anyone does. Name-calling? Can't we do better than that?
Sure technology marches on - but which technology, at what cost, and when? That is the million-dollar risk-management question. If one continues to throw good money after bad, will they come?
***If one continues to throw good money after bad, will they come?***They don't need to come. There won't be anything else available.
***And stating one's opinion doesn't make him a moron.***It's okay with me. He cuts my grass.
Gee, thanks for keeping up the conciliatory tone!Seriously, thanks for your posts. A great deal can be learned if one looks beyond the nature of how you make the points. Questioning assumptions and broad declarations, that's a good thing, to quote Martha. Got an opening for a pool boy, by chance? Will work for beer and good music.
Yeah, I see Sony rushing to produce hybrids. Moron.
you weren't so stupid, you'd understand why. Duh! And make sure you trim around those hedges, boy.
and/or ensuring future revenue streams."CD only discs aren't going to be manufactured in the future."
Nevertheless, other than Sony wanting this to happen: why pay Sony any royalties for hybrid discs, when many Sony/Philips' patents for Compact Disc have already begun expiring in a number of countries? Then factor in that hybrid discs are far costlier to manufacture, and the average consumer might not see a perceptible difference between either. It doesn't make much business sense to favor any current/future option allowing for lower profit margins, even if you're Sony.
now and in the future. That is an incorrect assumption. Costs aren't static.
Your proof SACD is alive is unfulfilled promises? Its easy to see the fallacy of your reasoning. If Tower dumps SACD tomorrow (a real possiblity) is it still thriving, even if the Stones arrive? If Tower and Circuit City wash their hands of SACD, along with Crutchfield and Best Buy, who have already done so, is SACD still robust? Of course not. And, if retailers like Best Buy dump the format, ABKCO has to rethink the SACD package of 22 Stones SACD's. Remember, cancellations are not given press conferences, so they will not announce they have cancelled the Stones project until cornered.
So don't quibble further over the fact that there is no clear definition of when a format is dead. There was no line in the sand when CD-4 died, but we can all agree now its dead. Did it die when the last record company dropped, or when the last disc was sold, or the last decoder put in the garage? Who knows? 24 discs on the way.
How many discs are actually in the SACD pipeline? With release dates?Dead is dead. SACD is dead or dying, take your pick. But my post was perfectly logical.
SACD can't die because SACD/CD hybrids can't be dropped by retailers. These hybrids are CDs. There is/will be no CD only version of these discs. Within 4-5 years, 50% or more of music disc production will be SACD/CD hybrid with no CD only version of these discs. Do you think Tower, Best Buy, etc. are going to drop CD? That's what it would take to kill SACD.
.
One person sells, the other buys. Each thinks they are the genius!!
First of all, I didn't sign up for an argument, I just wanted to let the gentleman who started the thread know that you are vocal about your doomsday theory on SACD, but there is reason to believe SACD is here to stay. Those reasons don't have to do with promises unfulfilled so much as actions already taken and set in motion--a serious investment on Sony's part that lay a solid foundation. As for the ABKCO titles, it sounds like the DSD transfers have already been completed. The press release states:
> > The restoration process for ABKCO’s The Rolling Stones Remastered Series started with hundreds of hours of painstaking research on both sides of the Atlantic to determine the analog sources most true to the original Rolling Stones studio recordings.
Final mastering for all albums was completed under the direction of the legendary Bob Ludwig who commented, "While three generations of music fans, myself included, are all quite familiar with the Stones’ material, DSD has afforded us the opportunity to showcase both their brilliance and rough edges all over again in a meaningful way."
All 22 of the albums in ABKCO’s The Rolling Stones Remastered Series, highlighting such classic tracks as "Sympathy For The Devil," "Under My Thumb," "Street Fighting Man," "Mother’s Little Helper," "The Last Time" and, of course, "(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction," will be released August 20th with Universal handling distribution worldwide. Suggested retail list price is $18.98 for single disc packages. < <
So you see, release date and list price have already been set. The transfers have already been completed from the best possible source material (with such benefits as restoring Beggar's Banquet to its proper speed). I really don't see much room for pessimism in this, or any other area of SACD rollout.
The question was: How did this turn into a personal attack?
As always.
she's probably auditioned in her two or three systems more High End components than just about anyone here at AA, even Mikel. She's a big fan of NBS cables and has more invested in 'wires' than most of us do in our systems, LOL.Kuma hangs out on the 'chat' a lot and is quite a nice person to speak with.
Later, Chris
My initial post related only to SACD, had nothing to do with you. Your post had nothing to do with SACD, and dealt with me. So Mr. Passive Agressive, you not only signed on, but baited the argument; your forte'.Let's leave it.
I can't really delete somebody for calmly replying and as long as it's not personal and/or really, really mean spirited like 'you both are fucking dipshits,' then I really don't care!:~)
Chris
So, what did you get?
Welcome, kuma! nice to see another Jota owner on this board too.Which model is it?
