In Reply to: Why is the Apex the only cheap combo player?????? posted by CC Rider on March 20, 2002 at 12:43:59:
I've heard that the Apex converts DSD to PCM before spitting out an analog signal. I'm not usually one to spread rumors, so I will ask if anyone knows whether or not this is true.....In gerneral, it seems to me Apex's niche is to bring you technology cheap, and I do mean cheap vs. inexpensive. Also note there is a difference between technology and good technology - technololgy being simply a capability whereas good technology is capability delivered with a certain quality standard. I'm confused about the market for an el-cheapo universal player. While their universal player will allow you to play all formats, why would anyone spend more money on high-resolution software just to listen to it on inferior equipment? I guess it boils down to that while individuals can be very smart, people are often pretty dumb.
Yes, I have owned a piece of Apex equipment in the past (it was a gift, honestly!), and although I was impressed at the time that the player worked at all for the price, it was indeed a piece.
Happy Hacking,
Pete
