We just put up a free 6 minute special session track of the beginning of the Mahler 3 recording, set for release next week. However, this version will not be included as it is a special outtake (with some dialog, etc).
What is nice is that it is available to anyone who is registered on the site, and available in ALL our formats (DXD, DSD64, DSD128 and DSD256) in both stereo and multichannel. Just go to the JustListen label page and download any and all.
Here is the description from the website:
In recognition of the Channel Classics release of the Budapest Festival Orchestra Mahler Symphony No.3 recording, (April 28) NativeDSD presents a session outtake of the Movement No.1 beginning. This clip was separately recorded using a natural perspective minimalist five microphone ITU alignment for surround in DSD256, and provides a unique insight to the collaborative effort of the session recording process. The original five channel raw DSD256 recording was also converted to, and available in 5.0 DSD128, DSD64, and DXD, and further mixed to stereo in the above four format bit and sample rates.
The Mahler 3 recording took place in the Budapest Bella Bartok National Concert Hall in two sessions: March 7, 2016, and March 27-29, 2016. This clip was from Take 2 of the 1st Movement, after a control room review of Take 1 with conductor Ivan Fischer, producer/recording engineer Jared Sacks, and several orchestra principles. In that audition, the tonal character of the bass drum at the movement beginning was discussed, and changes proposed for Take 2.
What's presented is an unedited DSD256 recorded session excerpt optimized for 5.0 surround sound by microphone selection and placement. It was later converted to the other DSD bit rates, and additionally mixed to 2.0 channel for stereo delivery. It's a backstage peek into a session recording of a major orchestra.
Follow Ups:
The full release is now out, and it sounds fantastic, if I may say so myself. All formats (DSD64, DSD128, DSD256 and DXD) are available.
Just an In-Joke.
Feel free to ignore.
That's not too far off the mark! For the 95 minutes of the album, the session spanned four days at an average of 5 hours every day. Actually, the first day with the alto and choruses, it was closer to 7 hours. Then they played the same program, plus a Mendelssohn "Italian" that night. Couldn't do that in the USA!
Since storage is cheap now, the recorders run almost constantly, with media markers used to denote Take numbers. All told, there's something in the neighborhood of 15 hours of recorded Mahler 3 music, with three complete takes of each movement, plus numerous patches. The offstage posthorn player nearly needed to be carried out of the hall one night.
It would be different here, you're right.
I wonder if Fisher is King of the Orchestra, not just Music Director!
I'll bet he works them hard, touring and recording so much.
But I'm glad they are.
Recording can be a real Grind, and very tiring.
They probably took that guy directly to Intensive Care. ( I hope...)
Thanks also for the superb action photograph that came with the file offering a real teaser "Where's Ivan?".
Oh yes, he's there but did you spot him?
Lots of Ivan from that M3 session
Women's chorus setup
Children's chorus setup
And about a year from now, the recorded last month Mahler Das Lied von der Erde. Very moving.

Gerhild Romberger; alto
Robert Dean Smith; tenor
Gerhild also is the alto, along with Chor des Bayerischen Rundfunks and Cantemus Children's Choir in the Mahler 3. They toured with the BFO in March of last year through Europe, which is why we recorded the 4th and 5th movements with them on the 12th, and the remaining orchestra movements after the tour on the 26th through the 28th.
Hi Tom... long time! Hope you are well. Thanks for all these great shots which I have added to my lap top gallery. John
It sounds like high level noise. This is the first DXD file I have tried to play and thought my equipment was to blame but Channel Classics emailed saying it is a mastering problem and not to play the file. They will update when the correct file is ready.

The corrected stereo DXD file was uploaded to our NativeDSD Amazon S3 delivery server at 3PM April 21 (yesterday). Amazon S3 automatically Zips uploaded files, and reZips if a change in the file is detected, like the upload date, or if a reZip is requested. It has yet to do so.
I'll be sending the corrected file via WE Transfer to all those who acquired it.
Thanks,
Tom
The replaced stereo DXD file is now available at NativeDSD.
DL'd the stereo DSD128 track. Impeccable transfer with impressive sonics.
