I will have a listen to the SA-10 shortly but expect it will be difficult to get a home demo. As for modifications on Marantz CD94 & Philips 960 they were very extensive amounting to a complete rebuild of both digital & analogue sections, these players were suitable for upgrading, whilst quite good as standard, the mods transformed them into top notch RB players.
Follow Ups:
No chance of a home demo according to one of the main dealers in UK as Marantz are pretty much making them to order. It is not a Limited Edition per se but production is limited to those who actually want to buy one, "Deposit up-front please". This tells me absolutely that the SA-10S1 is very much a flagship Loss Leader. Understandable when you look at the quality of Design & Engineering not to mention the up-front years of R & D.
As a user of dCS equipment the contrasts could not be starker. My bet is a profitable SA1-10S1 would come in around the £20/25k mark if it was made by dCS. Luckily it isn't.
