...player 'A' 'kills it' and even player 'B' 'kills it'. (I've written previously that IMO such terms are nonsensical in describing differences in sound quality that some of us CAN'T HEAR, even when we want to.) Then the next guy writes that the '95 is better sounding than either of those 2 players.
How about if someone who has a ModWright tubed '95 tells us how it sounds different than a stock '95?

or his words, here are worthless and should not be even considered. (i.e I doubt he's even heard the modded player)
I know Dan's mods very well, but not the Oppo ones, unfortunately. I had his Sony 99 and his Denon 3910 Signature mods (still have 3910, but not in system anymore), and was first to get Transporter modded.... and they were significantly better than stock...mainly in timbre/tonality, noise floor (better ps, in the case of the Denon and TP, external tube rectified ps) and overall dynamics. He's been very successful as a modder and that has led to great success with his own line of pres and amps, specifically the KWA 150 monos which I own (and several pres I have owned). Yes, I'm slightly biased, but not out of anything but great experiences as a customer. Oh, and his customer sat is wayy high.
As per earlier comment, his Audio Circle manufacturers forum is the best place to search, and ask questions.

the a-circle is modwright fan boy base central so no impartial opinions happening over there, but I like his stuff OK
No mod oppo bdp 95 just regular 95, but I hear fan from time to time and my listening lounger is twelve feet away. Next time no fan. Live and learn.
Modwright Forum over at Audio Circle has a lot of talk about it. Probably start and the END and read back....

Ah for the want of top of the line Oppo universal player without a stinkin' fan inside.
Maybe next product launch..maybe next product launch..maybe next product launch..
Ric Schultz, of EVS, who mods the Oppo 95, claims to eliminate the fan by removing the top of the player and replacing the top with one of his own design, that leaves space for ventilation around the sides. You can see photos and further explanation at tweakaudio.com. I have no personal experience with his mods, nor do I have any connection with EVS.
Absolutely true !
I removed the cover of my Oppo 95 the second week I had it ! ( That piggybacked circuit really causes the player to heat up quickly ! A cover that just lays on the top edge of player offers enough ventilation to prevent the fan from kicking in )
The funny thing is my 95 isn't seeing too much play time as I'm enjoying my Auraliti PK100 into a CEntrance DACmini more & I really have' nt put that many hours on them yet ! Now I suppose I'll have to track down an older PS3 so I can rip my SACDs to Hi-Rez files I can then play them through the Auraliti !
This cannot be done if you have the tube mod done. The tubes stick up through the top cover.
After all, that's how one removes it.
I have a '95 which sits about 8' away. The fan runs intermittently--perhaps it's thermostatically controlled--and the only time I hear it is when there's absolutely no signal playing.
But surely the top of the ModWright '95 can still be raised from its normal position and the fan disconnected?

I'm not an expert. I only know that Ric Schulz has designed a cover that is raised, and allows better ventilation - for the 95s without tubes. I have not heard of anyone who has designed a cover for the Modwright and Exemplar tube players. I imagine it could be done (although I would think it might be potentially more clumsy). It also may need to be raised more, given that tubes generate heat.
I am always amazed when people say something like
"...the only time I hear it is when there's absolutely no signal playing."
I am not being critical of you. The reason I say I am amazed is because even though one does not "hear" it per se, the noise is still there, and raising the noise floor. IMHO, a low noise floor is a *huge* benefit when listening to music. It's easy to experiment and test the benefits and problems by adding some noise to the environment (e.g., with a room fan); and then subtracting it. Of course, if one already has a somewhat high noise floor (traffic, refrigerator, kids, component noise), it is less easy to notice the effects of relatively small additional noise.
...of keeping it low. I was offering another opinion on the fan's overall sound level. Yes I wish it didn't have a fan...but I love the '95 anyway.

The fan is not a problem for me, as the only time I hear it is if right up on it changing a disc out! My room is dead quite and my previous sources all had no fans, having said that the 95 has better low level late night listening sessions, revealing the most minute detail retrieval I've heard in my setup.
I read that the fan only comes on for Bluray discs. Is that your experience? I can imagine that the noise would be intrusive!
After enjoying a top TEAC transport (in player without fan) never go backwards to Oppo 95 even if electronics inside are pretty good. Dan's 95 tube mod. Sota? Nah, no way. It's good for spendy budgeteers but far from revelatory. The Sota sacd/redbook setup I've heard is pCS Scarlatti transport/dac. For price it had better slay mass market Oppo with or w/o Modwright tube mod and it does. Have not heard the latest Playback Design/EMM Labs disc players. Esoteric K-03 easily bests Dan's Oppo 95 as well.
I had the Playback Designs CD player and my Modright modded Oppo 95 killed it. I have not heard the K-03, but I bet my Oppo would beat it.
but I only have about 2" clearance from the top of the 95 to the bottom of the shelf above it and the stock feet sit on rubber/cork footers which maybe gives it a little less than 2" clearance underneath.
many good things, but fan noise could be a deal-breaker. Or not?
Question. Why does the newfangled technology have to be modded with
old fashioned (Tubed) technology. The other Wright(Allen) turned
out many mods of fine quality with no tubes to found anywhere?
HAVE to be. I imagine you might be able to guess why some people do it and like it, though.
It's a deal breaker for me. I have a very quiet environment, and the added noise raises my noise floor significantly.
