This is a nice idea.
In classical music the sound of the violin is one of the most prominent. It should not be too difficult to compare the sound of a real violin with the sound of a violin on your best solo violin recording. It shouldn't be hard to hear the difference between a real instrument making music by exciting the air by some kind of vibrating string and electronic playback making music with electricity making the speaker driver vibrate. There are numerous properties of electronic circuits that just do not exist in natural music production, like the harmonic distortion profile of audio circuits for just one example.
I like the idea of natural acoustic instruments as a reference. But in reality it is kind of a moot point.
Follow Ups:
I play the clarinet and I know that no recording will get close
especially in my room as most recordings are done at different venues.
The point I made is that some good recordings can be used to judge others.
I know that Robert mentioned the Hank Jones 5th and 6 th of July recordings on many occasions and in a way it is a reference as far as recordings are concerned, Fitz once mentioned the Bach organ sonatas on Melba as a great example (I agree) of what the real thing sounds like, this is all that I am trying to say we all have recordings that we use as some kind of reference.
When Teresa gave us a list of her favorite sounding SACD's it is also
her reference. Now for somebody to tell me that it is wrong to do that
and that we should only compare the sound of a cd/sacd to live music is a joke as every venue will be different.
And lets face it when we buy new equipment we all use our best recordings to make a decision.
between references and preferences.
Live music is a reference, and is somewhat of a standard.
A favorite recording that one likes or thinks is good is a preference, and is purely personal and subjective.
