Stop being miserable and enjoy the music, I do despite our different set-up methods. Just for the record I do use a centre channel speaker & every time I have used auto set-ups on any AV receiver, have always found too much volume coming from rear speakers which is why I agree with Noel Keywood that manual adjustment is required.

It is you who is miserable, Dr. Negativo. Up to a point, we welcome your personal experience, but you go on and on. We are merely trying to set the record straight on mainstream standards and experience, which you seem totally out of touch with and wish to argue incessantly.
You know who Gordon Holt was. He once said something to the effect of the following: the day that individual personal preference dominates audio is the day that all audio progress ends. Food for thought.
from the Foreword of The Audio Handbook by Gordon J. King.Do you know the Zanzibar Fallacy? Percy Wilson, the first and most distinguished British reviewer of hi-fi equipment, likes to tell this story:
" On the Isle of Zanzibar, there is a town clock at one end and a cannon at the other. Each day, at noon, the clock strikes twelve and the cannon is fired. When a visitor enquired of the keepers of the clock, how the time was set, he was told 'By the sound of the cannon'. When he asked how the noon time was checked, he was told, 'By the striking of the clock'."

Today, we have easily accessible standards for time as well as for channel levels. If you prefer not to ascribe to the standard set by the mastering engineer, fine.
If reviewers in HFN & Hi-Fi World find that AV receiver auto-set-up for levels is incorrect and use manual adjustment for best mch sound, my experience, then obviously others must find the same. This is a similar situation to fuel consumption on cars. especially in Europe ,OFFICIAL figures invariably WRONG.

this is getting. You change the argument continually.
The issue is not whether an auto setup routine gets it right or not. The issue is whether setting all the channels to the same level is correct or not. Any setup system, manual or auto, can get it wrong.
Right/correct is, plain and simple, having each channel offer the identical level/delay at the listening position. Any deviation from that is due to preference (which is OK) or incompetence. The source of the incompetence can be the user or the equipment.
I have always referred specifically to levels from rear channels, both Stevenson & Keywood wrote in general terms that auto-setup did not give the best sound and manual adjustment was required. I see from the Forums that Audyssey is a controversial issue, some like it some do not. It seems that it requires professional set-up & calibration which is beyond the scope of most listeners. As I keep on posting I find the acoustics in my room to be very satisfactory so I would not require Audyssey .
Tiresome it is, and mindless on his part. You have summarized it aptly and succinctly, as usual. He is clearly starved for attention and makes these incessant, stupid arguments to appease that, not caring or, more likely, even aware of what a total ass he appears in everyone else's eyes.
At least we have discovered the main source of his beliefs - his guru, Keywood - whose writings and reviews are filled with inaccuracies on Mch.
