My Patricia Barber Cafe Blue SACD just started skipping. Tried to clean it with the Audience blue goop: no luck. Bummer. Cheapest prices on the internet(s)? $765, bazillion: or $100, take your pick: &^%&*^
SACD man, format ruined by corporate wankers! Still smarting from the lack of Eno SACD production. So annoying. I could say "a pox on their house" but of course, Sordidman goes out and fights to buy one of 3 new SACDs that actually get manufactured and released.... the format SUCKS, and is GREAT both at the same time....

Follow Ups:
My MFSL Dave Alvin SACD used to skip on my Denon Player. I had a few other SACDs that would not play either. Those SACDs all played fine on my pioneer SACD players and my PS3.
Well, the laser died and I sent my player to Chicago. They put in a new drive and some new firmware. Now, all of my SACDs and CDs play just fine.
In other words, it is likely your player. Please, try the disc in another player.

If it didn't come with DRM there would not be a problem, as you would have made a backup copy years ago.
DRM is sufficient reason why I have never had the slightest interest in SACDs. IMO the format was stillborn because of DRM. I will be delighted should the day come that Sony and Philips join Kodak in bankruptcy.

I do not disagree with you.....
But, from where i sit in the Utility Muffin Research Kitchen: I pretty much care about composition first, performance second, then sound quality. Like the other exclusive, elitist, snobs: I'm happy to pay more for quality; and it doesn't matter if I can copy it or not. Although, I totally agree, that I would not be having this issue if I could've burned this darned thing. :-)
Ciao,

No more credit from the liquor store.
If I don't get any credit from the liquor store, - can I get some credit and/or help from you?

Four years ago I bought two of the Patricia Barber CD's after all the music forum hubbub over how great they were. I sold 'em. My thirteen year old niece dug 'em though. She yelped - 'The Beat Goes On' is awesome. Play it again! Play it again! Ugh. She also digs Lady Gaga. Audiophile sound quality is not enough for me. Style over substance, but to each their own. Try the Ella singing the Songbooks and get back. Dude.
let's see...20 x $(add your own figure here) = .....
I'd have earned myself a neat bundle, except that i've given them away...

I don't know anybody who has one, I don't even know 20 people who know what SACD is :> )
.
Sure, I lied.Just as I am lying when I say I bought 8000 pcs of dmp sacd from Tom Jung, another 8000 sacds from chesky, and 16000 sacds from groovenote to give away as free gifts. I don't know who are the people who ultimately received them or if they appreciated the sonic differences that these hybrids discs made on their players, but I do know quite a lot of people like the Masekela and Cassidy on the last one, which were my choices to be included on the disc, or else no deal.
I was probably the one who sold the most sacds in 3 years in the Asia region!
Probably the record still stands :-)
Actually, I made 2 sampler sacd discs with groovenote, so the numbers could be 8000 + 8000 + 16000 + 16000 discs in total.
But why only twenty Patricia Barber nightclub sacd?
These were given to country based trainers in this region.I prefer to have titles of different genres of music from multiple record labels on these sampler discs to send a very important message that there are enough choices of sacds available so that buyers can feel confident and worthwhile to support the format.
You don't know 20 people who own sacd players?
You must come from a small town, and you keep to yourself all the time.
If I go down on a Saturday to the Singapore audio Mecca (adelphi building), I can easily meet and chat with more than 20 people who own sacd players.Mikel probably has had more than 30 people come visit him to listen to his system.
Probably safe to say, minus the odd fellas, they all have sacd players.
Why don't you do the hospitality thing and invite some people to your place to listen some sacd music now and then?

.I'm not sure how to take that? If you are going to make these fantastic claims you should identify yourself. Otherwise it is impossible to believe any of that. Might as well claim you give away elephants to anybody who wants one.
If you sold a record number of SACDs why are you not registered as a dealer? Country based trainers... training what?
I do invite people over but not to listen to SACD. Like I said; I don't know anybody who as a player including myself and I know a lot of audiophiles.

You don't own a sacd player yet?Why do we even need to bother talking to you?
Just kidding. :-)
Let's see...I bought the sacd samplers directly from the record labels, and I "re-sold" them to 7 or 8 countries in Asia that actively promoted sacd at that time. I made some additional mini sacd technology explanation booklets with information of sacd capable product ranges of that year and that got them inserted into the disc packaging. I use the word "re-sell" because I paid for all the items upfront and invoiced each country later for the number of discs that were delivered to them. But that doesn't really qualify me as a dealer, as I didnt made any profits from this whole endeavor.
The samplers were given as a limited time only promotional item when a sacd capable product was sold. In that first year, 8000 discs went out into the markets over 2 months period. The entire region's sales easily exceed 100k units per year, so to dissipate 8000 discs over a 2 months intensive promotion period really wasn't all that hard. In that last year, middle east countries started to promote sacd - that why the figures shot to 16000 discs.
Does the qty figures sound too fantastic now?
Trainers? Training what? For the most part, training retail floor staffs how to demo and how to sell home entertainment products, sacd capable or otherwise.
Did those sacd samplers made any significant contribution to the sales of sacd capable products?
Absolutely. While the samplers probably wasn't the main factor consumers ended up purchasing the sacd capable home entertainment products, they did helped raised awareness to potential customers at the point of purchase, of the added benefits of better music reproduction through those HE products over other competitive HE systems.
Did it helped sacd disc sales subsequently?
Absolutely. For those countries where software dealers actively imports, promote and sold sacds, and for those labels whose titles were included in the 4 samplers - Groovenotes, DMP, Chesky, Hyperion, Concord Jazz, Telarc and EMI. These samplers didn't directly contribute to revenue, but they inspired interested customers to go to music retail stores to buy the entire sacd album in which the sampler tracks were extracted from.
Did the samplers directly contributed to sacd sales figures?Could had been. Quite a few sacd capable product companies created samplers for the same purposes. Quite possibly the samplers did inflate some of the sales report that came out at that time. But then again, if you looking at the best selling sacd lists on the sacd.net website, the best sellers aren't any samplers at all.

OK
Interesting story but why would you invest so much of your time and money in such a big project that didn't make you any money? Seems like a lot of trouble to promote something that most people don't care about and don't even know about when you don't benefit from it.
I'm thinking perhaps your story is a bit incomplete.
.
perhaps when you own sacd players you would realise the joy that can be had, of doing something, anything, and sometimes at own financial expenses, that goes towards making the general public more awared the existence of this new (at the time), and all-round superior music playback format. does mikel charge any of his guests an entrance fee to visit him to listen to his music? does teresa make any money selling ad space on her website? do you think any of the people running many audio clubs around the USA takes a cut from the number of attendees coming to their monthly listening session? when record labels releases more sacd titles due to better confidence about its market viability, don't we, music lovers, directly benefit from it?
.
1. I have no idea who Mikel is
2. never been to Teresa's site so no idea about that
3. the number of SACD's is never going to grow to a significant portion of releases, it is a dead format
4. you still haven't answered why you would invest your time and money into promoting a format which is basically dead.
.5 Your conjecture that more SACD titles will be released seems overly optimistic.
When first released I was excited but now that it is dying away there is no need to invest.
well, looking at the title of your message, it looks like you have a problem counting beyond two.....
kidding :-)
1. I have no idea who Mikel is
=> use the search function.
2. never been to Teresa's site so no idea about that
=> search under the "teresa" moniker and get access to her latest musings on analog playback.
3. the number of SACD's is never going to grow to a significant portion of releases, it is a dead format
=> at the beginning of year 2003, sacd releases was raining down like a tropical thunderstorm. then it slowed down dramatically into a drizzle after fundings to sacd record labels were cut and pressing plants converted some of the lines into making blu-ray discs.
4. you still haven't answered why you would invest your time and money into promoting a format which is basically dead.
=> from year 2001 till early 2003, sacd was progressing really well. all that 48K pieces of sacd sampler discs were sold in that 3 year period.
.5 Your conjecture that more SACD titles will be released seems overly optimistic.
=> sacd did died. does saying it then in the year 2003 make me some kind of prophet :-)
First you claimed you gave away 32,000 SACDs and then you say you sold them. So is that 32,000 sold and another 32,000 given away or what?
Just as I am lying when I say I bought 8000 pcs of dmp sacd from Tom Jung, another 8000 sacds from chesky, and 16000 sacds from groovenote to give away as free gifts.
I bought the sacd samplers directly from the record labels, and I "re-sold" them to 7 or 8 countries
Then the number went up to 48,000 sold.
I was probably the one who sold the most sacds in 3 years in the Asia region!
Probably the record still stands :-)
Actually, I made 2 sampler sacd discs with groovenote, so the numbers could be 8000 + 8000 + 16000 + 16000 discs in total.
I get the feeling I'll get another answer that doesn't really clarify anything and raises more questions than it answers. A very entertaining fairy tale though.
.
It is obvious to everyone but you that I've done some work together with some manufacturers to promote sacd in Asia.Sampler discs were indeed given free to customers who purchased sacd capable audio systems.
Each country from Asia did have to "buy" them from someone based in a single location who in turn had to source them from the labels directly. The labels will only ship to one location, where the discs were repackaged with suitable promotional inserts before they got shipped out separately in various quantities to the various countries. The same goes for invoices and payment. I basically did that sourcing, shipping arrangements, creating promotional materials, arranging for insertion, packaging and shipping out. For the last 2 samplers, I did the titles selection.
48k is the correct number.

First I read you gave them away and then I read that you sold them. Since you only give part of the story each time you post and your story changes as you go why do you challenge my intelligence for calling you on it?
You're the one who brought it up. If you don't want to tell the whole story why did you post at all? Look at it from my side. Some guy posts that he gave away tens of thousands of SACDs and talks circles around why he did so. Then he says he sold them and even though he brought it up in the first place he refuses to identify himself or give a clear motive for doing so.
It sounds like a load of crap. Maybe it is not but the fact that you refuse to say who you are and why you did this means that I will remain skeptical.
Since you obviously don't want to give us the complete story this is a waste of time. good day
.
Long time inmates here will have understood the purpose and importance of making sacd samplers to promote the format, especially during the earlier years when software were few and far between. It's a labour of love for all of us involved in it. Thank you for wringing the little sniglet of information out of me.
"It's a labour of love for all of us involved in it."
You were serfs working for Sony/Philips, although you might have not realized it. More power to them that they managed to fool you into believing it was a "labor of love".

were getting into!
It must be a Patricia Barber conspiracy.
That was the disc that always gave me the dreaded (BIG TIME WHINE) no-disc error on the 7777 that would always read any other SACD I threw in. I use Shineola and know it has helped on other discs but to no avail on the Barber disc.
It is a fantastic recording and I am with you on the prices. Wish I had bought two of the damn things when they were 20 and change a piece.
It reads fine now that I got a big gun Esoteric (No Whining here now) Throw enough money at a problem, oh vey!
If you haven't, you must try the disc on a different player. This happened to me and it turned out to be the laser on my player.
play fine... well not TONS, but you know what I mean... :-)
Cheers,
"In this land right now, some are insane and they're in charge. To hell with poverty, we'll get drunk on cheap wine."
Seriously, you have to try the disc on another player anyway! I had only one or two discs that skipped, had them replaced, they still skipped. It could be your laser or transport beginning to fail.
Don't have another player.
And my transport isn't allowed to fail, as it's no longer available...anywhere... Thank goodness I still have my digital inputs...
:-)

Wow. I have a test pressing which I keep unprotected on top of one of my players for occasional reference. Think I will put it in a jacket.
Kal
Can you see a scratch on it? If not try cleaning your laser on the cd player

Cafe Blue was a originally recorded as a 16 bit master.
I've often wondered, past perhaps superior mastering issues, why would it justify a hi-rez re-issue?
That said, silly me, I didn't use that same logic when I purchased the "audiophile" LP. I much prefer my FIM CD version.
What's your opinion of the SACD version (when it actually played).
TB1
I used it as a "test" disc. Unlike other Mobile Fidelity muddy discs, - it sounded pretty well balanced to me. Not as bad as something like the Pixies SACD.
"In this land right now, some are insane and they're in charge. To hell with poverty, we'll get drunk on cheap wine."
I lost my copy on SACD. Can't find it anywhere, possibly left it behind at a dealer's a couple of years ago.
If I could reach it I would kick my own ass...
Frustrating!!!!!
Hard to say which is worse. You don't have yours around to look at. I can SEE mine, but I can't USE it... :-(
Out of sight, out of mind?
