I'm looking for some feed back.I have a Sony SACD 777ES and would like to know what folks opinions
on modifying versus going with a perpetual technologies DAC to
improve the redbook CD playback. I'm quite happy with the SACD
performance.
Follow Ups:
Here's the link to my initial review of the Richard Kern parts upgrade on my 777. It improved Red Book performance to the point where I moved my modified Counterpoint DAC to my secondary system.--Jim
I'm not sure I understand the extent of the modification.
I spoke toRichard Kern about a month ago,he was very detailed and
explained everything. The swapping out of identical parts in the audio board and power supply for another manufacturers parts seems
like a minimal approach.
Why would you not favor using the 777 as a transport and going digital out to a super high end DAC that has the optional ability to perform algorithms for 24/192 for your redbook CD playback. Isn't
that truly High Rez. Why would one wish to upgrade and still be
stuck with 16/44 playback?
Because the results are, to me, extremely cost-effective in enhancing Red Book performance...especially when compared with a connection to an extensively modified DAC with a 24/96 card. I'm even more impressed with the mod's performance after 500+ post-upgrade hours on Red Book.I'm sure that I could do better if I were willing to spend a _lot_ more...but I'd rather spend the difference in software...just a reflection of my priorities.

Agree about economics.

.
While I am enjoying my SCD-1 as much as I am now, I doubt I will be doing any mods in the near future, but I certainly will keep this in mind when the upgrade bug grabs me again.Appreciate your detailed analysis.

Investigate AudioNote DAC 1.1. Its tubed output stage and analog filtration are very interesting. Many people love it. I am considering it myself.

Adi,I heard that wrightmods is doing some terrific mod work on the
perpetual P3A. Somewhere down the digital chain you got to convert
to analog.
I auditioned Perpectual, speaker correction was great. I believe in simplicity. Any mucking in the digital domain WILL have unintended consequences. AudioNote's simplicity and tubed output stage are very appealing to me.Modding 777ES also an option. Search the archives for Richard Kern mods.
