Is the 3910 (with BB1796) better than the 2910 (with BB1791)by $400?
OK, it's a judgement call but that's why I ask you judges!
Follow Ups:
I am sure that a 2910 with a few simple mods would kill a 3910. The 3910 sounds better stock but there are many, many more things different besides the DAC chip....power supplies, parts, etc. This is oversimplification. In fact, it would be hard to even A/B the
DAC chips fairly as one is a current out DAC chip and the other a voltage out DAC. You could technically run the output of the voltage out DAC (1791) directly from its positive pin output through one super coupling cap to the output jacks.....would sound way better than the 1796 with all its op amps used for IV conversion, summing and all the filters, etc. on the output of a stock unit. If you are not going to mod a unit then most always the more expensive unit will sound better because of more power supplies, better parts, beefier transport, parallel DACs, monoed DACs, etc.
I love my 3910.... I put it head to head with the 2910 at the dealer. The 3910 had much better imaging and delivered a fantastic soundstage. I think the DACs are much more linear and sounded more 'analog' if that makes any sense. I owned a Denon 1650ar before the 3910 which had some proprietary circuitry: the alpha processor. The 3910 has some additional processing as well 'Al24 processing plus.' Whatever it does, it kicks ass. I spent the additional $400 and I'm not sorry for it one bit. Click below....
I have to second Bob's impressions. I had the 2930, traded up to the 3930. Audio DACS are the same as the 2910/3910 IIRC.Bigger, better soundstage is the biggest difference. The bass is more solid and better defined too, though that's not as noticable as the soundstaging to my ears
I auditioned the 2930 and it wasn't bad but that player is double the cost of the DVD1920 universal I have and not worth it IMHO. I do have other SACD players, the 1920 is used mostly for video and I have to admit though the 2930 was not broken in whatsoever. The 3930 costs that much more than the 2930 and I was about to consider it for that price.
