I'm sure the price for that level of performance has come down over the years. How much does it take to handily beat stock SCD-1 / 777ES these days in terms of SACD and redbook performance? What player can do it and doesn't cost anywhere that much?

On pcm layer a lot, on SACD/DSD layer very very few.
I just replaced my SCD-777ES which had started having trouble reading SACD with an Oppo 970 and on Redbook the Oppo was heads above the performance of the 777ES. I was somewhat shocked how big the difference was... much more open, dynamic, and alive. My original plan was to eventually send the Sony in for the VSE mods which I probably will still do but the Oppo certainly has me thinking a bit more about it. It also has me thinking about having the Oppo modded probably the only thing stopping me on that is that it's so cheap and pretty good stock that I'm not sure if it warrants spending more money on it.On SACD i think the difference is smaller and in fact the Sony may be better-I didn't spend any real time comparing the two since I listen mainly to Redbook.

Having owned an SCD-777ES and having listened many times to an SCD-1, there's really nothing much to brag about sonically. The only thing going for them was the build quality and finish. Sonically, they were just another Sony TOL player. Modded, this would be a different matter altogether.I've listened to a few Accuphase players and there's just no contest here. Even the 'smaller' model would, sonically, easily walk over an SCD-1/777ES.
I'm now a very happy and satisfied owner of an Accuphase DP-57..

But one thing, the build quality of SCD-1 would be hard to beat at its price level.

I bought my SCD-1 in 2002 only for the purposes of modding. In stock form its RBCD and SACD performance were both bettered by RBCD on my much older Theta Gen 5a & PS Audio Lambda II. But after many tweaks the SCD-1 RBCD & SACD is as good as anything I've heard and very close to high-end vinyl. At this point consider the SCD-1/777ES only if you intend to mod it. Also be careful because parts may become scarce. Sony no longer stocks the sled motor-- the weakest link in the player.
Sony no longer stocks the sled motor??This does not sound good. Here I am sitting with what looks like a piece of equipment built like a tank that looks and feels like it should out live me. And now you say that Sony doesn't stock one of its most vulnerable parts?

The part number RF300CH is a match to the part number on the stock motor RF300CH. However, on the line below this on the body of the motor is DD 3299 03. Getting very close here, but I believe the version used in the SCD-1/777ES is 12V.
Remove the sled motor and spray Caig De-Oxit inside, through
the holes at the bottom of the motor. Then run the motor in both
directions for 120 seconds (60 seconds per direction) on a 12 volt
power upply. This will restore proper operation for several years.
Note: Do not run the motor too long or you can damage it.

According to the the parts guy at the Sony 800 number, the sled motor part is "no longer manufactured"-- apparently consistent with Sony's policy of beginning to withdraw support 7-10 years after date of original manufacture(1999 for the SCD-1). You'll probably keep that transport alive forever given periodic grease/oil lube of transport gears & bearings & deoxit sprayed into body of sled-motor.
The "sled motor" is a regular, standard size DC motor as found in many CD and DVD players. The tricky part would be removing the pulley from the old one and installing it on the new one, but that shouldn't be that hard.My biggest concern would be the Laser Pick-up availability. It should be noted that Sony stocks/supplies spare parts for 7 years from the product release date after which the parts are no longer available. It's a Sony policy. Sometimes, if you’re lucky, the parts are available longer than 7 years. Sometimes parts become NLA earlier, especially in low volume products such as SCD-1 and X777ES. In that case you should be eligible to exchange your old product for similar current product at discounted price (at the current "technology advancement" rate you'll be probably offered an iPod or similar :-)), but then again it's a management call at Sony. :-)

Because there still could (should) be a significant stockpile of parts in supply even if they are no longer being manufactured. After all, some SCD-1 are still under warranty!

I checked again today & a fellow at the US 800 number said the motor has been MD'd and is at zero stock level in the USA for good. He did not know about parts availability in other markets. He stated that typically with older models the inventory level of specific piece parts is depleted to zero according to demand, while various other piece parts for the model may remain in inventory for a time. I was successful in ordering a spare spindle motor & laser pickup. No decision yet to withdraw support for the unit as a whole. Goodbye Yellowbrick Road.
It isn't Sony policy, but Japanese law that requires manufacturers to maintain a spares inventory for seven years. At least it was that way when I was in the repair/mod business a while ago.Graemme
Ok then, the 7 year spare parts supply Sony policy was created in order to conform with JIS.Happy now? :-)

They still listed the SCD-1 in '02 or even '03 for sale on their web site, so that should give us until '09 or '10.

I don't have that info, Dave. But there are many suppliers you can buy DC motors from. I m sure you can find one with some research. I have 5 customers with 777ES machines I've modded so if these fail I'll have the info right away and will let you know.Regards,

There might be a new customer base for you in replacing/repairing failed sled motors. My SCD777ES is about 6 years old with no replacement parts of any kind yet, so, I might be the first one!
??--I replaced my Laser/Sled motor for the SCD777ESD with both fromSpeedy Spares
and have a Spare of both for the future from them.

They replied today that they list it as "unavailable". Tough luck for those of us who have the original motor in our SCD-1 or SCD777ES units. A nice SACD player could become a boat anchor if it fails.
