trying to play Sony SACDs, hey they won't work they have NO CD LAYER! But dual layer CD/SACDs should work in all computer drives.
Follow Ups:
...nor am I trying to play single layer SACD titles. Give me some credit.I've got three Windows machines at home, XP Pro, 2000 and 98, all of which have DVD drives, a Toshiba and two Panasonic.
None of them, and I repeat, NONE of them will play any of my hybrid discs, not even the CD-DA layer. Same with the machines in the office, where the pair of Windows boxes also fail to recognise SACDs.
Open up Windows explorer, click on the drive and I get:
"Windows cannot read from this disk. The disk might be corrupted or it could be using a format that is not compatible with Windows."
So much for 100% compatibility. Maybe MAC users got lucky again.
I posted about this earlier/above by mistake. Here is some info:I'm able to play the redbook CD layer just fine from my computer. I'm using WindowsXP on a machine I put together and can play it from my DVD ROM drive (Lite-On 163B). I've read elsewhere that 1st generation DVD ROM drives have problems with finding the CD layer on hybrids, but almost all 2nd generation ones and later have no problem with this.
1. Try updating your system to the latest drivers and patches.
2. Check your DVD drive manufacturer's sites for any firmware updates/patches - if there are any, apply them.
3. If still no luck, try getting a newer DVD drive for your machine - it should be able to play the redbook CD layer of the hybrid just fine.
Thanks for the tips, I'll give them a try.In all honesty, I really don't want to play an SACD in my PC drive, either layer, since sitting in the other room is a fairly decent system, but I'm interested in getting the incompatibility issues sorted, just for the heck of it!
I admit this is the only computer I've tried them on.
computers.
Yeah, CD-ROM drives are fine. My Sony notebook has an external CD-R drive and it has no problems playing the red-book layer (Windows 2000 Pro).Trouble is, at least for me, all recent PCs are supplied with DVD drives, rather than CD-R.
There were some first generation DVD drives that could not read SACD's as they were incorrectly trying to access the hi-res layer first and this was causing them to fail due to there inability to read the hi-res layer of an SACD. This was fixed by many manufacturers via firmware updates but in all of the testing I have done with 40-50 different drives from various manufacturers I have yet to find a drive in a Windows environment that will not read the Redbook layer of an hybrid SACD.My suggestion would be to look for a firmware update for these drives. If you would like you can post the model number of the drives and I can see if I have any updates that might assist you.
