Almost as good and every bit as comfortable.
Bought these for my wife to watch TV based on the reported 'comfort' factor and they are REALLY close to HD-600 sound quality.
And not over priced at $157.11

Right now you can purchase the Sennheiser HD 558 @ Best Buy/ Magnolia Audio for $100. ! A steal of a deal for an entry level audiophile headphone The difference between these and the HD 598 besides the color is that the top end on the HD 598 sizzles a little more... AND the headband is one continuous piece as opposed to the HD 598 which has the pocketed sections on the headband. I found the sound on the HD 558 to be very neutral but slightly veiled.... YMMV...
I still have a set of HD600s. Every serious headphone listener should have one for a baseline to judge other newer designs. I have had mine for at least 20 years. I have changed ear pads and other parts over time. I have used the famous Surf Blue Cardas cable and now it has a Toxic Silver Poison cable that is much more supple. The 598 is a nice set of headphones for a normal person, but an HD 600 is an audiophiles headphone.
My HD600s recently broke after many years (the right driver stopped working, the headband pads were flattened). Sennheiser offers a flat-fee repair service on this model for $140 that includes 2-way shipping via UPS. They specify that it will take longer if you want your specific set of cans to be sent back; they may choose to send a new or refurbished set.
About two weeks after I dropped my broken headphones off in a box at UPS, Sennheiser had delivered a brand-new set, complete with fancy packaging (sturdy hinged box with foamed compartment). Great service!
The pads on my HD580s and HD600s had flattened out over 20 or so years of use. I was about to think about replacing them, when I found these on Amazon. They fit perfectly.
In the red circled area, there is something that sticks out.
Does it affect ear comfort?
Not when new. When the earpads get flat after years, yes. Earpads are replaceable. It is there intentionally for something relating to imaging.

It should sound similar... it's only "two" different (598 vs 600)...
That's less than 0.003 % ... :-)

I really like my old HD-555's, and these look like their successor. I also am unlikely to spring for HD-600's so I suppose I should give them a listen.
Dave
I have the predecessors which sound almost the same: HD595, and HD580.
Yeah, they do sound reasonably similar, and have good comfort, but.......
The difference between the sound signatures is like the difference between a good Beatles cover band at your club, and going to your club and finding The Beatles playing.
Yes, similar, but not the same.
On the other hand the 595/598 is much more sensitive and easier for random devices to drive and is fine for non-intense listening, and as such perfect for your application.
I have had these since 2012 and have been very satisfied wit them.
As for cracks in the headband where it rests on the top of my head, they are noticeable but do not affect use yet.

I have these and there is one basic problem with them. The headband starts cracking after a short period of time. Just be aware!
Is it a part that is covered?
The upper part that rests on your head.
