Wow...have I been out of the loop!! I need to replace a set of head phones. I have used for many, many years, Sennheiser PXC 250 noise cancelling headphones. I have gone through 3 pairs of these as they eventually wear out somewhere in the cord. Each time I have bought them again, for about $80. I am about to replace my latest pair and I find now that the price of these is $200!!!!! They moved up to the PXC 250 II model but I just cant believe the price increase!! $200? No thanks. I am done with Sennheiser. I'm not tossing them $200 every few years.
I have never seen the price of a consumer electronic model more than double before. If anything, things get cheaper as time goes on.
Incredible.

A lot of Sennheiser products have gone up in price because they have been more strict about enforcing MSRP.
Well that's incredibly frustrating. Yes, time to look at a different model!
Do you think you'll stay with noise cancelling headphones? There was a recent review by Tyll Hertsens you might want to read. Just a data point for your consideration. I don't actually have any personal experience with any of these.
For the situation where I want to exclude outside noise I use either my ATH M50 closed back headphones or my Etymotics IEMs. Both work well at noise exclusion... the IEMs are amazing in this regard.
My Sennheiser headphones have a replaceable cable. Did you check to see if yours does?
Same with mine, a quarter twist and the cable pulls free and ready to replace.
That's because the cost of warranty replacements is KILLING them. Great little headphones but they don't last more than six months before they're dead. Go ahead, ask me how I know ...
Best way for them to stop the warranty cost bleeding is to not sell anymore of them, or to raise the price so high that they can make money on them knowing that they replace them under warranty on at least a 1:1 basis.
I can understand things a bit better now. Yes I have had to replace these headphones every 1-2 years as the cords just are terrible. But they are the right size, great for travel, and sound good. Are the $200 really better made? If I got 3-4 years out of them, then I guess my costs are the same.
I'm not sure what brand headphone to try now. The Sennheiser 250's were my go to headphones for many, many years.
I had a pair of the previous model for several years, and they work fine--no cord problems. However, their noise cancellation is miles beyond the Bose QC15 headphones, which make things very quiet but don't give such great sound.
... What?
