Just picked up some Grado 80i cans. I'm a bit of a tinkerer so I'm always looking to improve things. I found some modifications that can be done to the foam ear cushions. I also came across some wooden tubes but I am confused about just where they go. If they go between the cans and my head then that would seem to stretch out the headband and could be uncomfortable to say the least. If they go on the outside I assume they act like infinite baffle.
There is a guy on E-bay selling these but, with my own shop available to me, I would make my own. I tried to do some research on this an found a few forum mentions of these but not enough info to actually tell their size or just how they are mounted. Is anyone familiar with these?

I have never heard of "tubes" made for Grado headphones. If you are referring to aftermarket wooden earcups made to replace the stock plastic ones on the SR-80i headphones, however, you should first find out how to disassemble a pair of Grado headphones. You will need to know how to melt the glue holding the stock Grado earcups together and how to remove the drivers, cabling, and headband fixtures as needed. Then you must have the skills necessary to precisely refit everything within and/or onto the new earcup assemblies and get them glued/screwed back together again. A few people over at Headfi have done these things before, so I would do a search over there for more info before you commit yourself to a substantial rebuild of your Grado headphones.

See link below. Now that I see the custom grados posted I think I get it. They seen to replace the plastic bodies? Maybe?
Yeah, they replace the plastic tubes and extend outward. It is actually very eay to dissasemble a Grado. the whole assembly is held together with a dab of hot melt glue. You can heat gun the whole thing or you can very carefully simply pry the assembly apart. I use the later method. While doiing that you can even ionsert a small double pole double throw switch and have a means of controlling polarity on your phones like the Grado Siggiers of yesteryear.

Don't know what you're talking about (link?) but I had my 325i's woodied. See my link below. They're beautiful and maybe sound better.
