the talents of a jazzer cannot be done by a classical one, classical cannot do rock etc...
I know this because I had ALL different types teaching in my music store. Some don't understand this but I've seen and heard this many times.
PERIOD
Follow Ups:
He uses both hands in ways you don't frequently see.
I know you weren't asking me but I would characterize him as a phenomenal inventive virtuoso who wrote his own rules on music theory. I got to see him live as the warm up act for Crosby Stills and Nash. I was blown away.
I write this from my front row balcony seat waiting for the amazing Xuefei Yang who is my all time favorite classical guitarist.
They can not be compared. Guitarists like Hedges are just so different in their technique.
Every once in a while we are in complete agreement. :)
I think he was fabulous as well.
He was good*, i have 2 of his CD recordings.
Recorded on the bright side but works
* I heard he passed away
My favorites are the earliest of the Windham Hill releases that involve no compression, limiting, etc. like "Breakfast in the Fields" and "Aerial Boundaries". And had the good fortune of seeing him live several times in the late 80s and early 90s while I lived in Atl.
I don't like 'characterizing' too much, you either like or not. Pretty simple eh? Too bad he died that way.
There are BASS players that took up all kinds of different 2 hand finger styles too, Jaco, Sklar, Clarke, Mingus. I had a Teacher years ago who plays Bass with B.D. Lenz and goes by the name James Rosacha. Still touring but haven't heard from him in quite a while. I got him his first Spector Bass as a Kramer dealer, one of the best.
I cited more generally well known examples because when I saw RTF in NYC many years ago it was like being high. People were smoking of course so maybe it was second hand smoke but boy, my eyes lit up
..."Top 10 Greatest Rock Guitarists" list. One knows prior to opening the link that Hendrix will sit atop said list. I find it hard to believe that in the 50-odd years since his death, no rock guitarist has developed the technical skills to surpass him. If one wishes to insist Hendrix was the "best" due to his innovative and influential shtick/style, fine. He was first to the party and all that jazz. I get it. But Jimi checked out at the tender age of 27 and spent much of his life stoned. Nor do I think his stint in Vietnam would have afforded him many opportunities to hone his craft. So it strains credibility to insist he was the best guitarist in rock history. Some will say he was the best due to his large hands. But I'm not buying it. Plenty of other guitarists have large hands. Nostalgia is a lasting and stubborn thing to overcome.
And I'm not sure I understand any of your arguments. IMO a musician is judged on their actual work not their life span or their state of living. Many of the greatest composers didn't make it past their 30s.
With that said I personally wouldn't put Hendrix in my top 10 list of all time best guitarists. Maybe top ten best rock guitarists. I love Him mostly for his music as a whole. He definitely was unique and wonderful and innovative but not the greatest virtuoso nor particularly versatile.
...what Kenny G is to sax.
A really LOUD blues guitarist!
but I do recall Hendrix telling Chicago's drummer that the drummer's band has a better guitar player than Hendrix himself
I don't think you can ask a highly trained classical guitarist to play the blues or to play infinite variations on some tune in the jazz cannon. Nor can you expect a pop guitarist to play much from the classical cannon. But if you look only at sheer technical ability, the pop guitarists just don't cut it, for the most part.
Life is hard. It's harder when you're stupid.
but wouldn't you know it, there are some in Rock and Jazz that add it also. The average person DOESN'T KNOW THIS. And they do things with the left hand that classical CANNOT do. Listen to the 'Hellicasters' for a fun, wild ass spin.
It was a wrong statement to begin with way back. that's all it was.
And listen to Al Dimeola and friends - "night in san francisco". I tend to prefer Flamenco guitarist's instead of classical anyway
