Some Linn enthusiasts insist on having no other loudspeakers in the room, aside from the ones being played..... They claim having idle loudspeakers present in the listening room degrades the sound.......
Follow Ups:
Yes, I think that's true, but not for the reasons most audiophiles or Linn believes. Similarly musical instruments in the room can influence the sound, but not because they resonate with the sound. Ditto for cell phones in the room, it's not due the tiny speaker in the cell phones somehow interacting with acoustic waves in the room. It's more mysterious. Much more. In a similar vein, removing speaker grills usually improves the sound but not (rpt not) because the grills aren't acoustically transparent. See, now we're getting into the area where things go bump in the night.

How does their removal improve the sound if not because the grills aren't acoustically transparent?
You wouldn't believe it if I told you. But if you don't believe me hold a speaker grill up in front of your head sometime while music is playing, you tell me if that changes the sound even a little bit.

I'd like to know even if you think I wont believe it
I don't wish to start a fight with anyone, so I prefer to remain silent on the reason why. No offense to you. The only hint I can give it's the same reason why cell phones in the room hurt the sound. Even when they're in your pocket, meaning it can't be the tiny speaker in the cell phone resonating in the room. It's also why clocks or watches in the room hurt the sound. These things I mention are easy to test. All you need is good ears and a method of testing. Hope that helps.
