Come to think of it, still do. No evolution here.
Follow Ups:
X sounded like nonsense to me back in 1980. By the early 90s I thought they were pretty great. One of maybe 4 bands I can name all the members.
Edits: 01/11/21
photographer Bob Gruen who chronicled a lot of NY punk acts said they were the worst band he'd ever seen and the best band he'd ever seen.
I never got to see them with Thunders, Nolan, and Kane. Did get to see them here in Pittsburgh about 10-12 years ago, but they're just David Johansen's backup band now.
The problem is not that there is evil in the world, the problem is that there is good. Because otherwise, who would care?
.....audio components, the worst and the best.
1972-1975, maybe 1976. At the end, they were managed by Malcolm McLaren and he had them dressed in red patent leather with a big hammer and sickle stage prop hanging behind the drum kit.
When Johnny Thunders and Jerry Nolan quit, Thunders was replaced by Blackie Lawless from Wasp.

.....I'm not even sure The Dolls were the worst band to play Max's. I remember walking out on both Klaus Nomi, and Devo, on different nights of course. Stiff competition.
