So you will have a lot of enjoyable listening ahead of you. I have enjoyed him for many years now.
I enjoy much of his playing. He can be quite a nice relaxing listen and he can rock out as well.
And he turned down a bunch of money offered by studios to go it on his own.
This is a nice short documentary on him.
Follow Ups:
Colma is a very nice, mostly acoustic venture. Population Overdrive has some great instrumental rock on it. The Death Cube K projects with Bill Laswell (another incredibly prolific musician) are suitably spooky dark ambient. But I've heard some other stuff of his that is just bad cartoonish funk. Couldn't get past the first half-minute of any of the songs on some of those albums.
As for the bucket and mask bit -- it's an attention-grabbing gimmick for sure, intended to set him apart from the thousands of other talented guitarists. Put me off initially, until I started hearing some of his better stuff.
My understanding is that the bucket came about due to stage fright. One of those documentaries on him notes it.
I am sure with 300+ albums playing a variety of genres they won't all appeal to everyone. But then not everything Beethoven did is my cup of tea either.
I guess he might be the Franz Joseph Haydn or Georg Philipp Telemann of guitarists............
