I agree about "free listings" being a bad strategy.
A lot of good things happen when you make people pay something.
At least charge $5, or even better $10. Then put a 1% (w a max of $20)voluntary donation option.
Put that money back into making the trading section better.
That's my "free" advice. Not worth much is it?
Follow Ups:
I would guess payments turn into money to pay taxes on. Where the donations to help keep the site running may fall under some protected status (as far as taxes go, nonprofit?)
Selling ads becomes for profit, and may be a true PITA.
Or at least the effort to keep it clear all is non profit? may be a problem.
I know Audiogon way back charged $2 a pop, and one could have a credit account/prepaid account. (In fact Audiogon STILL owes me $18 they swallowed with no comment at all, the bastards, after the changeover from the original Michigan dude to the dude East. By now, with interest AND penalties, Audiogon owes me like $87,020. easy.)
Yeah that would pretty much dry up most listings. IMO of course.
"that would pretty much dry up most listings"
Meaning..?.. people wouldn't post listings on AA because they wouldn't want to pay $5?
Yep. That's exactly what I mean.
Most people that use this site are too cheap to pay the $25 contrbutor fee. I doubt very much that they would pay any kind of a listing fee!
Exactly. The free service also frees the site owners from what is sure to become constant complaints about things not selling quickly enough, etc.
Right. Doesn't sound like much but it's more the hassle/inconvenience than the money.
