Hey guys, I'm brand new here. I read over the rules but I'm an idiot so it's possible i missed something and I'm posting this in the wrong section. So if I am, please forgive me.
Anyway, I just got a new house and I'm looking to set up a home theater from scratch. I'm brand new to this so I have no idea what I'm doing so I'll try and provide as much helpful info as I can.
My room is 14.5ft x 18ft. It's in the basement so I'm thinking a projector but I'm not sure the pros and cons vs a large TV.
I want a large screen which will be displayed on the 18ft wall aka the front to back of the room will be 14.5ft. I put together a preliminary list via some googling and stuff. I don't currently have a budget in mind but I'm open to starting simpler and upgrading later. A lot of items on the list are KEF but I have no brand loyalty I just built something to start with so I came as prepared as I could.
Can anyone offer my tips/advice/build out suggestions for a complete theater?

Projectors have gotten a lot less expensive since I built a system. Given that the market is in flux with 4K becoming the new standard, I'd opt for a fairly inexpensive 1080p projector. You can always upgrade later when the prices for 4K projectors are more attractive and when there is ample content to make it worthwhile.
Two major factors with projector systems are light control and the screen. Good screens are expensive. I went with a Stewart microperf screen that was an electric, retractable ceiling mount. It also had 4x3 masking all of which increased the cost to nearly $7K. However, it was a 130" screen and would effectively last forever. Microperf is a great feature as you can put your center speaker behind the screen which is wonderful for dialog and imaging. Masking was a waste and you could save quite a bit with a manual retractable screen.
You can start with a decent receiver and speakers. Get large ones for the front and preferable 3 identical ones for the front LRC. Don't bother with 7.1, it doesn't make much difference and basically isn't worth the cost IMO. Put the money into a couple of good subs instead.
All in all, a big screen TV will be cheaper, but anything over 65" gets awfully expensive and there's nothing like a projector with a huge screen in a dark room. If you have a lot of windows, projectors are tough to get a good picture during the day.

Projectors vary from $700.00 or so and up. You want to decide if 1080p is good enough or wanting 4k. The JVC 400r is an excellent projector with modern features and although not technically 4k it does display near 4k and HDR content, the PQ is very good, most reviews say it is hard to discern the JVC pQ from true 4k. The 400r may have a new model by now, and as a disclaimer new 4k projectors have hit since that review, although a true 4k projector will run you 5 figures to my knowledge.
Large screen TV's 65 or over with excellent PQ easily approach into good projector territory. Of course, you then have to factor a screen.
Your receiver or separates could depend on what speakers, whether they wll require a lot of power to drive etc. So many options. I personally favor Marantz. You'll also need to decide if wanting Atmos, or, exactly how many channels.
Speakers are so many options, first decide if speakers standing in the room is alright or if wanting to try in-wall, In-ceiling, or, on-wall. I feel standing speakers are best but sometimes an install could require the other types, space, wife, placement, etc.
If just starting it's good to gather information but a trusted professional could save you some headaches and/or mistakes.
Good luck and feel free to ask additional questions as you go.
Thanks for your advice I've heard a lot of good things about SVS
For the speakers I'd consider SVS. Great HT value.
Post in video asylum!
Here's a more appropriate website that offers exactly what you've been looking for. Enjoy.
Cheers,
SB
