...60s High School pal and college roommate and his friend; one became a star, the other a Super Star. Pre-Fame we barnstormed Ohio and Michigan in our cars with a drum set hanging out the trunk.
I didn't have to do anything except both the above guys had convertibles which in those days had narrow back seats, non-existent trunks. I had a behemoth Chevy sedan and drove a lot.
I don't know where you were but at our gigs, definitely... "Chicks For Free".
You were a lucky guy. We had a 22 or 24 foot box truck to unload and reload, and it was FULL. Sure, lots of grunt work, but when everything was set up and working, it was, like, a totally excellent time, dude.
Stopping for hamburgers at 5 AM was my introduction to forgetting about the "normal" day/night mindset/thinking.
In hindsight, it would have been fun to be on the road with a major band, driving multiple 18 wheelers around the country. I know a guy who did that, and he's got some great stories.
And, yeah, "chicks for free", except that the sound guy was nearly invisible to them. :(
