The Mellotron went from "that" to the instrument that was essential to groups such as the Moody Blues, King Crimson, and Genesis to name a few.
HORRIBLE things.
Sure went to a lot of trouble to do make the same ridiculous sounds as those organs I remember as a kid seeing in Holiday Inn restaurants.
I will never think of the MELLOTRON in the same way after this.
The automation only works well with a tiny percentage of songs..... (And it's always demonstrated with one of those select few songs.) With songs that don't work, the automated accompaniments just sound "wrong".... And it may sound "hideous" in some cases.......... (It's also ruthless if you make a mistake, and try to re-establish the music to the automated rhythms. Like trying to catch a moving train.)
This has been attempted with electronic organs and keyboards seemingly forever..... But the same problem always arises..... The only people who can make instruments like this sound good all the time are trained musicians who manually fill in the accompaniments, with the automation turned off.
Oh, never mind. ;-)

Take it away indeed! No really...get that thing out of here.
I remember David Nixon from my youth as a TV magician, I didn't know he was involved with the Mellotron. I've seen a Mellotron listed on many seventies albums and always thought of it as something fabled. After watching that film I will never think of it that way again :(
