I do believe audiophilia is best transmitted by direct contact with the experience....then the reading.
That's how it was for me.
Go to Sterophile's website and search "Stephen Mejias" and read his ouvre.
Normal guy gets the audio bug in a real world.
What makes you think junior is normal?
We do inhabit an Asylum, after all.
;D
I obviously think Stephen would be a terrific exemplar for any 'new' audiophile to get a feel for the experience. He loves tunes, puts Hi Fi in perspective, and likes to play with gear.
Bingo!
His 'experience arc' should be of value to any new arrival.
What makes you think you can call him "junior"?

Central Fest is on Saturday, August 25th, and you're invited!
Good one.

Avoid anything that starts with "subjective"!
Forget about your ears and everything will be OK!

"there should be!!"Why? Aren't the thousands upon thousands of pages of papers and articles and advertisements enough?
(Not to forget the perennial introductory primer articles in the magazines.)

I think I know most of it but it always nice to have explicit directions/instructions.
As of now I am not using a computer source. For some reason I believe that a very convenient convention will become standard for the industry, but that will only happen if there is demand. Right now most kids are perfectly content with earphones and some sort of MP3 type device.

Never the same?
Do you see where this is going?

If you think fables are hard evidence, you're the emperor, for real. A truly unflattering self-projection. Well..it's kind of funny too. In retrospect, particularly your first illustration.

...Woody Allen saying, "Here's all you need to know about sex."
.
...maybe you should.
I don't think Woody is interested in both.
...the kind of obsessive compulsive worry that it takes to be an audiophile or you're not. Some people try to "become" audiophiles but can't pretend they actually worry (or even care) if cable risers will make a difference in their system.
Then, you have other people who just try to listen to music but can't stop thinking about the last component change or tweak they did and how it impacted their listening experience... to the point where they start doing frantic a/b comparisons using 10 second excerpts from 20 familiar tracks that are reduced to mere test signals.
And if you've never gotten it that bad, sorry - you're just not a real audiophile yet! ;)
Cheers,
Presto

...ask J. Davenport Briggs IV, or if you really want the poop ask Sudz.

Seems like audio is evolving a lot as well. Computer Audio, Home Theatre, etc. Best thing is to walk into a Highend Salon, if they exist any more, and ask to be shown around ;-) Don't spend anything the first few times, though.
Go to an Audio Show, or just find the slide shows, to see what it looks like ;-) That will discourage everyone except the most committed audiophiles!
Money and golden ears..

...I recommend.
It's very informative.
Neither do I. But I know ohms law. He doesn't seem to.
Observe, before you think
...he knows a lot about audio equipment and critical listening skills.
That's really what it's all about.
Is it?
..."holds a degree in recording engineering and has taught a college degree program in that field. He has worked as a recording engineer and studio owner, compact disc mastering engineer, technical writer and audio journalist."
From "The Complete Guide to High End Audio, 3rd Edition".
And you think he doesn't understand Ohm's Law?
a
Really? "Critical listening skills" with elderly, aging "golden" ears?
...get better with experience, like tasting wine, for example.
Age and high frequency hearing loss aren't as important as the learned skills.
See if your wife can describe the differences when you insert a new preamp in your system - her hearing is probably better than yours.
Why are wine tastings done blind, but not audio? Why isn't Mrs. Harley reviewing?
...not blind testing...again.
If you read Harley's book that I referenced above, it contains his AES paper about why blind audio tests don't work as an appendix.
Read it and then we can talk.
The horror of blind testing to expose frauds!
...all amplifiers sound the same.
The rest is just...snake oil.
All amplifiers do sound the same ........ It's the 3 feet of power cable you plug them in the wall with that makes the all difference. :^)
Which book printing do you recommend? A first print with the errors or a later issue with some corrections? Has Mr. Harley shared his insight with Wine Spectator, Robert Parker et al. why their methodology is wrong? You are right, of course, I do trust the wife's observations. She apparently has as much an electronic foundation as Mr. Harley and a keen eye for the price tags.
...blind tests don't work for wine tasting.Pretty much anyone can taste differences in wine.
They just don't work for audio equipment comparisons unless the differences are large.
But until you do some reading you won't understand the differences between your taste and audio processing.
For instance, blind tests were first validated for new drug clinical trials.
The background, experience and skills of the people taking the drugs don't affect the results in those tests.
They do in audio DBTs.
Most people don't hear differences.

That is sweet! Are you saying they are invalid because people don't hear differences?
Okay, now I get it. Wine tasting is easy, " pretty much anyone can taste differences", but audio is so much more "skilled". I need to trust someone weak on electrical knowledge, diminishing high frequency hearing and read his book. Again, which issue? I agree with your closing sentence.
...what you should
They can all hear way above 20Khz!
