I have a Yamaha A/V receiver purchased about 6 to 8 years ago. This was their top of the line A/V receiver at the time. Long story short, a couple years ago, the subwoofer connection and two rear channels went out. I took it in to a local authorized repair shop, and the diagnose was that the main broad needed to be replaced and of course, Yamaha is out of parts. So this thing is now a sitting boat anchor. I would hate to throw it to the dumpster. Any suggestions as what I might do with it? Wife wants it out of the garage....

Post it on one of the Av or HT classifieds as 'free for pickup or cost of shipping'. I have done this with a few dead components. Someone will ask for it!
It still works as a stereo setup ? Well what do you want for it . I might be able to use it for a workshop system ! what model is it ? I decided I don't like more than 2 channels anyway so it really isn't a broken item to me lol

I've been hanging out here for over 15 years, and boy, has the landscape changed. Seems like a lot of "angry" people out there ready to chew up anyone for asking a simple question.
Thanks for all the good ideas from the rest of the community! Some of us are more conscious about the environment than others, I guess. So on Craig's list it goes.

I've had Incredibly mixed luck with Craig's list.
I listed a Sony SXRD RPTV. It needed a light engine, which is about a 300$ rebuilt part. NOTHING else. I got one guy who would 'send his assistant over' with a 'USPS money order for the price'. BUT, he would be 'out of town in Europe' for 3 weeks so I'd deal with his 'assistant'.
I told him 'cash only' and never heard back. I Did NOT ask how a guy spending time in Europe, not a cheap seat, and having an assistant, would need a TV needing repair. Total cost would have been about 500$, counting acquisition of set. SCAM.
Another guy answered my ad for a Rotel RB-1070, offering 25% ABOVE my ask if only 'I could ship it to him right away for my GFs birthday'. This was also to be paid for by a USPS money order. The phone # listed in the ad? The scam alert I googled even had a very similar note to the one I got.
I have had some good luck, too. Sold a NIB Sony TV. Great deal for both. But, other sales didn't go well, especially when I suggested meeting in the parking lot of ANY local police department.
Best of luck with the typical Craig's List bottom feeder.
Too much is never enough
Sorry Frank but I won't be much help.
It failed two years ago and Yamaha still cannot supply the repair parts? That says as much about Yamaha as it does for your patience.
I must agree with others who suggested your tech may not be very competent. Anything more complicated than switching out a board could be too much for them.
Your wife wants it out of the garage?!? I could understand that if it was an AMC Pacer that hadn't run in five years, but an AV receiver? You must have a very small garage.
Failing all else, suggestions to give it to a relative/friend/neighbor/thrift store seem the best idea. Why clutter an already over-stressed land fill when most functions of the receiver still work?
"For a nominal service fee,
you can reach nirvana tonight."
especially home theater receivers and that's the main reason I detest them. Cram everything into a box and if one thing goes it's a boar anchor - and if it doesn't have HDMI it's automatically worthless poo even if the amp was working. (So say the home theater Gods).
I don't hate receivers mind you - I plan on buying one in a couple of months - but I would NEVER ever spend large coin on it. Get as entry level as you can possibly buy and then in 3 years when it's obsolete sell it and buy a new one (get ones with 3 year warranties). Then you will always be up to date on the technology. And really the amplifier sections are not very good in any of them so you either buy sensitive speakers or an external power amp and buy the receiver with preouts for all 5-7-9 or 11 channels.
I am planning to buy the Marantz NR1603 (~$600). And I am betting it probably out-features and sound no worse and is more technologically advanced than any 8 year old receiver at more than 5 times that price.
it's a sad comment that stuff just get 'thrown out'. And yes, here in CA, you'd be best served by sane recycling.
My RPTV? Tried to get it fixed, but the light engine was designed to fail, so I sold that to a rebuilder and had NO takers for the rest.....Finally took the remains to a recycler. Later, sold the remote and a good lamp and spare lamp housing to another. Spare / good remotes are hard to find, unless you go logitech or similar.
AGAIN.
IF you really liked this receiver, try to find someone to do a board level fix.
A 'board swap' tech? Not worth his diagnosis fee. I can swap boards.
I'd never buy 'designed to be obsolete' stuff whenever possible. HT receivers are the worst in this regard.
Buy a pre/pro and good amplificaiton. Swap up prepros every 8 or 10 years, as needed. The pace of change may slow down now, while the market catches up.....I hope.
Too much is never enough
Dumpster is the best idea
the law in California, for obvious reasons.
I bet it happens all the time anyway. Smoking pot is against the law, too but lots do it.
Take it to another tech and find someone who is willing to do a 'board level fix'.
It isn't quite this easy, but just changing boards is lazy. Can't get the board? pitch it, is the motto.
Now, as for expense. Since this was a top $$ machine back in the stone age of 2005, you should set a max to fix price IN YOUR HEAD. If the fix price exceeds your number, donate to landfill. If not, go ahead and get it fixed than sell it for fix $$+ a few bucks. or just fix cost.
I hate pitching otherwise good gear.

Saying that the *entire* main PCB needs replacing is laughable.
They either didn't want to invest the time, or lacked the skills to troubleshoot down to the component level. But, such is the world of out-of-warranty consumer electronics.
There surely must be electronic recycling centers somewhere near you. Landfill dumping of electronics is not good stuff.
Has at least three front channels working. A great standby receiver for someone. Just drop it off at the good will in your neighborhood. Most people do not utilize anywhere near 7.1 channels yet. I don't.
The Goodwill stores here are required to accept broken electronics
for recycling, including old CRT TV's. Your results may vary.If not, your local garbage collection service probably can tell
you who recycles them.

Doorstop.
Yeah. Been there, done that (replaced the main broad ).
Wasn't cheap, but it was worth it.

Simplify.
love it...lol
may the bridges I burn light the way...
Gawd, that's funny!! :)
Same here. Just four more months to pay off the "broad" upgrade. 10+ years of monthly payments, and I see a new preamp in my future!
Especially when I found out that the motherboard was connecting with a different fatherboard.
Gift it to a nephew or niece. Let their mother worry about their garage.

Put it in your local Craigslist free section.
... You have done nothing for two years so this obviously hasn’t been a priority for you.
Your wife now wants it gone! Give it away or throw it away, problem solved.
Life is too short to worry about such inconsequential matters.

Just find a relative who wants a two channel setup and has NO MONEY.
Give that person your receiver.
If the two main channels still work, I'm sure some music lover with limited funds could put it to good use. Good thinking.
Best regards, Ralph
Exactly. Somebody will find a need to drive deck speakers or some background music in a workout room or basement.
They seem to be manufactured as disposable commodities. Even if you could get parts, it probably wouldn't be worth fixing anyway.

There is something fundamentally wrong with the mind-set that produces multi-thousand dollar products that are looked upon as disposable commodities to be thrown away when they get over five years old.
At the opposite extreme there are few examples; Quad ESL57s that are over or approaching their half century mark and Western Electric gear that's over 75 years old and still used.
It's a strange world.
That's why I love magnepan.
I bought some used MG-1s and had 'em repaired at the factory in 2004 or so. They were 25 years old,at least. And still supported by the factory.
Good stuff can be fixed and is generally worth it.
A good reason to avoid hi-dollar CD players. Commodity, marginally supported transports being sold to hi-end companies which won't fix 'em 5 years later.

" I took it in to a local authorized repair shop, and the diagnose was that the main broad needed to be replaced and of course, Yamaha is out of parts "
So, if you cant get parts, doesnt that pretty much answer your question as what to do with it ?
Lets just say you could get it fixed for $250-350+, wouldnt it be worth it to buy something newer than this one ?
Throw it out on garbage day and someone will take it , and let it be there problem.
Not that I'm trying to fix it. But more of thinking whether places would take it to salvage parts or use it to train technician students on how to fix things, or for people who might like to experiment, rather than creating landfill.

That might be the answer. If a local college offers a program in electronics repair, you could give it to them.
Many municipal waste disposal companies now recycle electronic components, rather than dump them in the landfill. If yours does, you could give it to them.
just put it out the night of garbage night and I am sure someone will take it.Or list it on ebay for cheap and maybe someone will buy it.
