we've replaced them, preferring not to sell them for a "loss" and in the hope (largely delusional) that ever again we'll deploy them?
I have images in my head of countless widows wondering what the heck to do with basements, closets, and garages full of stuff about which they have zero knowledge or interest (but towards which lingers a tad of resentment).
Follow Ups:
I'm a huge old equipment pack rat. To make matters worse, I really enjoy large speakers... particularly 'stats! I give away a lot of stuff to family & friends, especially if I can persuade them to adopt some of the bigger stuff - like the AR9s & Soundlab Dynastats that are now at one of my brothers houses! Electronics are easier to store, but also easier to find homes for. I almost never sell anything out right, it just isn't in me. One of the advantages of giving to family is the "repatriating" that often happens latter, when they change/redecorate... getting some of the old stuff back years latter is like a little reunion!
I have seven operating systems in and around my house, need to have a reason for keeping audio gear. Can't stand having equipment laying around unused.
I have 3 speaker amps in one system and I like them all. I am sure I am not alone.
I rather have the equipment be put to good use instead of hoarding it, after experiments I knew I couldn't stand ever listening to the older stuff so I give it to friends and family instead. They appreciate it and comment that their "stereo's" sound "really good", that's enough for me :-)
While they aren't as amped up about the experience as I was (felt like finding the key to the universe to my mind as I remembered changing equipment, one at a time), they have better sound than they will get at the big box stores, and it will last them a lifetime due to the build quality.

I just replied to your post above about your friends. Same applies.

Yuuuup!
It's now mine, mine, all mine!
Let's see what I got here for 25K. I can see a nice pair of Dynaco 25s, surely worth $2,500, oh and that Soundcraftsman EQ, man another $3,000! The Garrard turntable, those were the all time best and this one is in the two tone wood finish, wow, if it works it's worth well over 4K.
Pretty soon I'll be as rich as Dave Hester!
3 pairs of maggies
dynaco a50's
ar 3a's
jr149's
fried q4's
imf tls50's...
and that's just some of the the speakers - also have lots of electronics - a lifetime of hunting and collecting

Uh, that would be me. Everything including a Radio Shack STA180 receiver, an original Futterman amp and an unbuilt Scott Tube tuner kit.
I almost always need to cash out of the old piece to afford the new piece.

reelsmith's axiom: Its going to be used equipment when I sell it, so it may as well be used equipment when I buy it.
I have a studio apartment no space for extra components in anyway. Before the internet dealers accepted trade-ins and that is what I did. Now I have to sell on the internet and do without until I have the money to buy replacement equipment.
Some day I hope to be rich enough to buy new equipment with cash only and not have to purge a lot of recordings to come up the cost difference between what I get for an old component and the cost of a new old.
"Happy Listening,
Teresa."
A small apartment would be even worse. We have a fairly large house , but I still don't want rooms of unused equipment, speakers, audio racks and such. If I see something hasn't been used for a while, I'll ether give it to a needy friend or sell/trade it. If I had held onto every component in the past 40 years or so, i'm sure there would be over a hundred pieces. It's enough having one small room dedicated to current audio empty boxes, one closet filled with unused cables, cords and electrical things, and another room partially filled with a very nice audio rack and a few choice vintage pieces, the rest of the room housing music disc's of various sizes and over a thousand video disc's.
and man does it destroy good equipment from lack of use. I had to put out a pair of Churchill's for trash because it was easier than lugging them to Goodwill.
I guess I'm somewhat of a packrat as our mudroom cabinets are full of speakers (KEF, Celestion-Ditton, Paradigm and NHT bookshelf sized speakers), and a few amps and receivers (NAD & Denon stereo and Onkyo HT) plus a few turntables. This is what's leftover at Neuvo Casa Nasty after deploying 4 two-channel and 2 HT systems here and there. Of course, there's always my office to account for as well with 3 systems currently deployed and a couple of extras in boxes. Oh yea, there's also a big ass garage sale Pioneer SX-850 receiver in the back of the 4Runner I haven't lugged into the office yet to clean the pots.I too worry about passing and what the luvly Mrs. Nasty will do with it all. What I don't worry about is a "tad of resentment" toward my hobby. She's a goodun ;^)

Would love to keep hold of as much gear as I can for future comparison but since I usually can get a fair price I sell it so I can get better gear, or records, or tubes, etc...
That sounds a little like me.I find it hard to part with vintage audio equipment.Hell I'm still trying to talk my dad into giving me his Teac reel to reel that he hasn't used for 25 years or so. I have never owned one,and I like to have have nice shiny things, This sickness I have is something I just have to learn to live with :)
Those big reels can certainly get to you...
Especially amps. That said, I do swap amps in my main system periodically just to savor different flavors. I have 3 complete systems in my house, but I do need to cull the herd a bit. I've given away 2 1/2 systems, and a couple of CD players. Some better quality than others, depending on the recipient. Still, I have quite a few amps to get rid of.

I have a pair of Rega NAOS speakers in their boxes and a JVC acoustic synthesizer thing and an ARC VT100 III amp sitting doing nothing, I let go of the Linn Genki, but sold the guitars.

Oh I forgot the sub, it's retired also...

You need a bigger picture. They don't even need to be widows to think that...

When I am finish with a component that's it. A'gon or AA here it comes. There has never been a time where I regretted selling a component I was no longer using. Whoops, make that almost never a time. When we downsized I sold my SME 20/2 TT with SME V arm and Shelter 90X cart.
Unfortunately, in during a brief period of insanity, I also unloaded my entire Lp collection.
Still, would have had a hell of a time finding a place for the TT in our den.
Now primarily concentrate on high rez CDs such as SACDs, et. al. Fortunately, kept all my CDs.
I've got an SME 20/2 IV.Vi/Koetsu Black in my closet now. Moved it in there after I got the boot from my second listening room when daughter no. 2 arrived 4 years ago. I've got no idea how best to get rid of it. Keep thinking I'll haul it back to The Analog Room and see what I can trade it for.
I'll tell you story about selling my TT, arm and cart.
Really don't want to pub. it in the forum.
Guilty as charged! :(
I have been gradually downsizing my surplus department, partly to stay afloat when my recent bride was out of work.
Now, anybody want to buy some European HO trains? :)

and she gotta go out and work long and bring some dough"
Probably, my nephew will get the Infinity Prelude MTS
Have gotten stuff for free (CDP, preamp, tuner, receiver, TT) & given away stuff (speakers, surge protection, cables, receivers). I still have the CDP, tuner & TT. Have given away stuff on AA a few times too.
I don't hold onto anything I'm not using & don't even have a 2nd system (in the house) anymore. I do have a tuner only system in the garage but it only qualifies as a system in the broadest interpretation of the word.
No spare parts available!
What did you replace them with?
Also, using active Infinity Intermezzo 2.6 in my TV room.
I have been on the receiving end of a couple of goodies from a friend who couldn't get a decent offer for them when trying to sell them. Part of the rationale was that he would have some good stuff to listen to when he came to my place :-)
