Not a Paypal user, don't wanna be one. I know there are many on this board that feel the same way.I recently won an item on eBay and paid by Postal MO. Day after mailing it, eBay Loss Prevention emails and says the seller has been removed/suspended and I have probably lost my money. OK, as it was only $30, but I am getting ready to pay another seller a LOT more for a deal on Head-Fi. I don't really know if this guy has Agon feedback and anyway that may not be relevant.
Question is, is there any protection if the seller walks with the Postal Money order but does not deliver the goods? I mean is there an option with the USPS itself? TIA

I just bought a set of speakers from a guy that refused to use paypal, and also refused to take a personal check without a crazy amount of "hold period".I was not expecting it to take so long to get my speakers and in the frustration I wired the money via western union. I didn't get shafted, luckily, and it wasn't too much money, but I sure do appreciate the safety and convenience of paypal.
Paypal and credit are the best tools we have for dealing online, they aren't perfect but that isn't a good reason to stay living in the past.
If you just don't like using credit, you have check cards, you have virtual credit cards, you have direct withdrawl, and all can be used with paypal... and they all offer some sort of fraud protection.
I am not going to shill anymore for paypal, but I am going to say this: Nothing sucks more than having to wait weeks and weeks to get an item when paying via snail mail. The only thing that sucks more than that is getting your payment stolen, yet all of these things can be avoided quite easily by using you know what.
When I was selling frequently on eBay I had my account suspended twice for selling vintage bootleg LPs, some of which selling on eBay are a DEFINITE nono and others that are in a grey area, and, essentially "OK" to sell. Well, OK in the sense you can get away with it...eBay sent out the same "warning" to my customers and got everyone into a dither. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, I did everything I was obligated to do, such as send paid for items to the buyers. I did this because it was/is the right thing to so. Just because eBay sent you the warning DOES NOT mean your seller will screw you. Then again, it works the other way as well. Also, no telling WHY your seller was suspended. It could actually be something nefarious. Contact the person and explain your concerns and remember that most likely the seller will be back on eBay soon enough, and you may have recourse then. Bay is an important outlet for most sellers; they don't want to lose that market. Communication is a must in this type of situation.
As regards the MO. If you have records of a legitimate transaction paid for with a MO, I believe you have the advantage and right to persue mail fraud. For $30 I don't know if it's worth doing, someone with more experience can give better advise. Paypal has worked great for me. I have over 700 transactions as a seller and all has been good. My wife has over 3,000 transactions as a buyer and no problems whatsoever. In fact, she will NOT buy from a seller that doesn't accept PP.
Good luck!

Money Orders are just too easy to cash especially for small amounts. There's a lot not to like about Paypal but I've had 3 transactions, 2 of which were well over a thousand dollars, where I paid and didn't receive my purchase. I used Paypal funded with a credit card and each time there was no problem at all having the charge removed from my account.
How does one set this up? Is it in the preferences? When I have funds drawn from my paypal account, they take the money from my bank account. I'm not too keen on this and would prefer that they charge my credit card for the obvious protection is offers.

Sorry, but this is why so many of us depend on PayPal. I've read the horror stories, but it sure works for me.
.....Many businesses now offer PayPal as a form of payment for online purchases. I prefer it to any other type of payment method.Smile

Im sorry to hear about your loss of dosh.
I only use paypal and pay that with my credit card.
That way if it all goes pear shape, its the credit card co that foots the bill.
They can beat up paypal/ebay etc much better than I or You ever could.
BTW I've always gotten my money back.
...in almost 30 years, and it was in a land far far away. Actually it had reminded me of a friend from that long ago. May I ask where you picked that up?
Unless I know the seller, I only use Paypal with credit card. I recouped 400.00 once from a deadbeat tube seller that way. Never would have been able to get the money back had I not used a credit card.
check it out.... I wouldn't count on them tracking the guy down for $30, but maybe he's part of a larger fraud ring. Best protection is abstinence, haha, unless you're feeling very comfortable with the seller and it's a small enough sum that you can afford to lose it.
all you need to do is take the money order reciept to your local post office, and have them run a trace on it. If he's cashed the money order and failed to send the product, you have him for mail fraud. They will go after him for ten cents. I once had a guy in CA that had headphones on Ebay. He sent me an email stating that he'd never recieved my payment, and this was followed by notices from Ebay itself. I just went to the post office and had them run a tracer on it. His wife had cashed it! Sent him an email stating this, and of course he denied it. Went right back to the same post office and showed them a copy of his email. They paid him a visit, and he couldn't wait to send me the headphones. Total cost was less than twenty dollars.
