because you have dimmers on your lights that feed back noise into your wiring when they are on.

I personally don't turn all the light off... I just dimmed the light down. In winter I use candles and oil lamp.Well, one thing for sure when you don't see the equipments you are less likely to think about upgrade them... or maybe not.
Anyway, like Carl side below lighting have great impact on human mind and mood. I use halogen light in my room with bule gel filter and this make me feel relax. But of cause you could use any color you like.

she was the finest lady you'd ever meet outside of our home...but when she hit the door of the house, she could tell some of the raunchiest jokes, and swear like a sailor. The "f" word was the only one she never used. When my sister got married, the two of them were carrying in the wedding cake to the place where the reception was held (this is farm country, you get a neighbor to make your wedding cake). My sister tripped and her hand went through the cake and she yelled, "F***!" and then looked up, expecting Mom to be mortified...she looked at my sister and said, "That's a perfectly appropriate time to use a word like that!"
Heard of the term, "beauty is only a light switc away"?
Wow, I'm an odd duck. I really don't like to listen to music with the lights off. I find that following the imaging on the soundstage
less confusing and more rewarding with the lights on. In fact, I guess I'd say that the only time I experience listener fatigue is when the lights are off.....
What's up mit that????

experience visual art with earplugs.just because the interactions in your brain are more "focused", doesn't mean the music is better...open a bottle of pinot and then we're talking. :-)

depends on the Pinot.
I listen with my eyes shut, thus having less distractions. If I try and close my eyes to relax and have the light on, I find that I'm not as relaxed as I'm trying to keep my eyelids closed tight. When all lights are off, I can relax and don't have that distraction.
I am sure you've seen or have done this yourself...you close your eyes and tilt your head to try to hear something. (shut done one sense to increase another)PLUS...this may not be true for everyone...but in the dark you have "less stuff" to look at and you know you are there just for the music, less interferences.
I would guess that a lot of people DON'T like to listen in the dark, they get tried of waking up and hearing the ffffffffbummmb ffffffffbummmb ffffffffbummmb of the cartridge on the manual TT at the end of the record that ended 3 hours ago.
But I could be wrong.
...to better read a street sign? Lol...
I like a small light or two on behind the big rig (pointed at the floor), a 60 watter perhaps. My preference is for dimly lit. I don't listen as well in pitch black room.

One of the reasons is that the human mind tends to integrate perceptions of different "sources", so we unconsciously try to
integrate optical and acoustical impressions and make a "hypothesis"
about the world that's around us.Another example: Psychological experiments showed that people tend to
believe they listen to music that sounds "brighter" if the light
is on and that it sounds slightly "darker" when it's dark, even if the music they listened was identical in both cases.
This is the same kind of reasoning why amplifiers with golden knobs
and cables with a silver coat sound better than standard types
because the human mind not only uses perceptions but also biasings and
former experiences in order to form a "hypothesis" and to interprete
perceptions.
