People always say that Audio Asylum is a great place for audiophiles to exchange information with each other (which it is). But I know I met Batman because of the Asylum, and he has helped me with many projects that I could not have done alone. I found that he has been more help than instructions on the internet could ever be.So how many of you inmates have met other audiophiles because of the Asylum? I'm sure there are at least a couple interesting stories to hear.
Take care,
Neil

Great thread! Not sure, but some who've been attending our meetings also hang out here. Associating a name with a face is always fun, and people tend to open up a bit more in person. We do our best to make everyone feel welcome and encourage them to participate.
Must have been over fifty or so that dropped by at the last CES.....
They always end up getting restraining orders... ;-}
It was an exjoyable afternoon.
I got to hear my gear on horn speakers.
Thanks again Randy...
Tazsmonn The Cat Herder.
What are your speakers and system. What horns did you try. How did they sound?
I am fortunate enough to live close to "mg" and "tenniswino" who have wonderful systems and have been great hosts at our hifi parties.
Regards, Jerry O.
...thanks for always filling me in on the details. Some day, I'll be able to go down to SoCal and pay you a visit. By then, your leg will be 100%, and you'll be able to whip us all in rollerhockey and gymnastics.Take care!
Well, I'll certainly look forward to having you over when you're in the area.

so there
I am in San Francisco by City College. I want to meet inmates to share my system and get feedback on it. I would travel 30 miles to hear other systems as well. This hobby get lonely sometimes.Ruben
I live in the 'Moe. Most people would rather that I visit them, rather than the other way around. And besides, my room is small, so it can't hold too many people. On top of that, my parents never seem to leave, so they're always using the system. Which means we can't use it.-Lummy The Seahorse
U mean Fillmore? JC , born in SF, but now lives in the peoples republic of Berkeley.
Yes, when people say they live in the Mo'e, they are referring to the Fillmo'e. This area probably bottomed out in the late 80s. The turning point was converting the Pink Palace into senior citizen housing. So while all the other SF neighborhoods deteriorated in the early 90s, the Mo'e is one of the few that turned around. It's been slowly getting better since then.
I used to have a girlfriend who lived on Fillmore St. in 1962. It was a dangerous place then. Looks like a nice place now.
I think Fillmore starts at hermann, not too far from the Safeway on Market and Church. It's got some nice-looking homes there, but Fillmore is a narrow street, and it gets congested rather easily. You then come to Haight, and then it's nothin but apartments and homes, until you come to that church near Fell. From here, you can turn west, and go to the DMV, Golden Gate Park, and beyond. But if you stay on Fillmore, you'll pass more apartments, some housing projects (ah, home sweet home), and eventually come to McDonald's, the back of Popeye's and Safeway, and shops. The Fillmore (club) is on geary, right next to the renovated post office. Cross Geary, and the Boom Boom club is on your left, J-town to the right. Pass goodwill and Burger King, and now you're getting to the nicer, "lower Pac Heights" area, where it's got nice shops all the way 'til Jackson or so. Eventually, you go over the hill, through Union, Lombard, and Chestnut, and end up a Marina Middle School. So it's amazing how many neighborhoods Fillmore Street crosses. My memory fades, but I think a long time ago, Harmony Audio/Video used to have a small store on Fillmore near Sacramento. Can anyone verify this?
I'm in SF, in SOMA.Though my schedule often changes last minute I'm game for listening exchanges.
Those inmates who heard my system last time would be amazed at the improvement, and all through placement and tweaks.
MAPRIK can attest...
There was aguy supposed to come over on Fathers day but I had to go out of town. Since then we still havn't gotten together. But the the invite is open to those in the SF Bay area. I live in SJ right off I280 and east to get to. Let me know if you'd like to come down. bobwire
I met Cato through a very strange coincidence in which a proposal he wrote landed on my desk and then we actually met at a business meeting in New York (we both live in London). That was funny.Cheers

After conresponding for over a year both on and off-line, Inmate Greg came over just yesterday to check out my system while his amp is in the shop for revision(s). Inmate Dan has also been over, swapping cords and such. You meet the nicest people on AA.MikE

There are some very active audiophiles in our area that participate in this website. I was able to attend the meetings of the Bottlehead Forum whos members are continuously writting in and of course there is Doc. B himself. If I ever make the effort to attend the Northwest Audio Society meetings again, I'm sure there will be some inmates there as well, if they would introduce themselves.
Well, I know John E will be happy to read this post, since he says he is tired of hearing about it, but I did meet some cool inmates at the Kimber Summer Vacation in June.It was cool to hang out with some other Asylum members, and share the hobby. And by the way, it was a flame free weekend. Too bad the Asylum can't be flame free!

yippi kay yay yae!
I have an "open" door policy that any hobbyist is welcome to come by for a jam session. It is a wonderful hobby and I believe it benefits us all to get to know each other. Have a great day.

I've met eleven inmates so far. I probably will meet 4-8 more this month at get togethers at my place and elsewhere.I've found we all share one thing in common -- were nuts!
Cheers, (i'm off to the online med store ; )
MagnetarMusical Realism = 320,000 Gauss ! Get real - Get horns.

Not many. . .
You might want to sign up on a ShoeAsylum for better odds then :)

Jim Willis stayed a day here last year. We spent so much time trying on different outfits that we hardly listened to any music at all.I also talk on the phone with a number of Asylum inmates, or their wives while they're at work.
BB
I've talked with a few and even found out that one lives two blocks away from me (surprised I couldn't hear his system that close!)

I had the pleasure of having John C.-Aussie over to the house last year for dinner when he visited U.S. "rellies" in Woodland Hlls.Inmate Jerry O and I have gotten together along with inmate Mark G( and another buddy who we recruited for the asylum (MikeM) a couple of times. Our get togethers will hopefully become quite regular.
I'm trying to put something together for a get together with HiFitommy, Craig Goff and Owen Meany in the very near future (J.B. where are you??).
Anybody in the Southern California area willing to drive to the Thousand Oaks/Simi Valley area and share their love of music and audio - drop me a line.

... it was more than a pleasant surprise
to meet up with two other 'mates in the
desert of eastern Washington state. Each
of them live within 20 minutes of the
homestead.Lessee ... hung with Rod and his lovely
bride on trips to CA, as well. All the
'phools I've met in person have been
nothing less than wonderful folks.
æ
About 4 or 5 of them who have come here on honeymoon/holiday/visiting family etc , all of them great people (and those are aside from the locals whom I have met via their postings on the internet/AA)
Apart from that have made tons of "pals" virutally , on IRC(chat) and via E-mail - It's great being part of the online community - makes one feel a lot less insular.

in the Asylum sign-up thing. (?) That way we'd know where not to move... I mean who's a neighbor.
NewbieBaby brought over his Teres turntable to play on my ORIS 150 system. This was beautiful music. NewbieBaby wanted to hear the ORIS and DrM and I wanted to hear the Teres. We were all pleased with what we heard.Kurt
no fun unless you can have some good Sonoma Co beer. Makes the music sound better too :)
Thanks to Brian Walsh posting info on the Gerneral Asylum I connected with the Chicago Audio Society. Met several midwest inmates at the meetings.
...you were a Califonia girl.'Those midwest girls keep you warm at night......'
Got tubes?
...you were maybe a "solid state" guy???But seriously folks...Every winter, I wish I were a California girl. Not enough warmth from the Rogue to help the heating bills.
BTW, your listening room is almost the same size as mine (19x39x8.5)
Hola Neil:Now that you mentioned it, I met CVega because of my friend GC, who is an inmate and I didn't noticed. GC and I know each other for several years and basically by commercial business. One day he came to my house and noticed that I have a music system and he start talking about it. Because of him I entered the Asylum. Later, I knew CVega for various postings and we conclude that both new GC, so, we met at his house, which is about 30 miles from my home and since we shaked hand we knew we were audio-related!!! Man, we talked and laugh like old friends and his family is great. Now we mantain a good relationship between our own families (3 kids each).
One day, AudioGabby replied one of my post and we start shating. When we start questioning our procedense we were shock to know that we are both from Puerto Rico ( he is leaving in Vernmont) and he came to his family's house twice a year. He is also about 25 miles from my home. We met at CVega's home one day. To our surprise, AudioGabby and CVega studied at the same town and knew each other and he and I studied at the same college. Imaging what a coincidence.
The strangest part of it, CVega, AudioGabby, GC and I(Jose Garcia) are of same age 40-42,and live about 15 min to 35 min from each others house.
Now that I'm moving and AudioGabby is coming back on November I will give a big party to all my audiophile friends ( don't worry my wife likes the idea).
I have made several internet friends that I would like to know personally but maybe sometime, in the future, when the Asylum makes it's First Anual Inmate Meeting at any convention center, we will met.
Here's and idea. Why not make different Audio Asylum Society Groups representing several areas. That's is basically what we are doing here in our country. There are many inmates from California, Chicago, New York, U.K. etc. Each region can contact each other and have representation on shows, conventions and other type of activities. It is easier that way to have new equipments for audition at their places and have interesting meetings and discussions oriented to the audio hobby.
Just my thoughts,
regards,
Jose Garcia.

Several of our members regularly visit the Asylum, and every little bit to help people get together helps. I'll see about setting up something on our web site for the purpose.I have made several internet friends that I would like to know personally but maybe sometime, in the future, when the Asylum makes it's First Anual Inmate Meeting at any convention center, we will met.
Such a thing is possible. Who's going to do the work, and who's going to fund it and organize it? Most of us have day jobs, doing what we can, when we can. What activities would you want to see? What can you contribute? I'm all for the idea, but these are important questions.
nt
Jose,
That's an interesting story. Glad to hear you made some friends through the Asylum.I think that's a great idea about the Asylum Societies. I just don't know if it's possible.
Take care,
Neil
Not only did Frosty (Hey, Neil) and I meet because of AA, we discovered that we only live about three miles from each other. Not bad odds for a city of 1 million :-)I had dinner with JClick several months ago. I learned a lot about tubes and vinyl from him....nice guy.
I'm gonna meet Muzikmike one of these days if he can tear himself away from that vinyl collection long enough to come home to visit his relatives. We grew up a few miles from each other.
I'm toying with going to VSAC, how many Inmates am I likely to meet there?
Despite the sporadic outbreaks of nastiness at AA, I've found most of the Inmates with whom I've corresponed privately to be really nice guys who are genuinely interested in helping each other. I think most of the inmates fit this description.
Some are really nice gals.
All the inmates I've met/corresponded with HAVE been guys. I'd sure like to meet some of the asylum women too.
> > VSAC, how many Inmates am I likely to meet there? Most VSAC folks will be from AA or is it vice versa. Hope to see you there.

Oh yeah, plenty. like when I walked in on John C's wife with her pants down. Nice legs.I've met many inmates though I've yet to have a face to face with even a quarter of the board members. While I've never been disappointed IRL, cyber-life in a virtual entity is most strange.
met andrewh up in berkeley a few weeks ago... nice system and an even better guy. i had a good time, and it's always fun to chat audio-geek-speak to another human being. just wish i had more time to hang out.carlo
Funny, I've met Andrew through the asylum too.Where are you at? I'm at Cal, too.
-Jon
I'm in southern california (upland to be exact), but i was in the area for a concert (ani difranco) and a vacation during the 4th. i should be up there visiting in a few (maybe more) months. with you, andrew, and luminator, i'd could make a trip of just visiting inmates. wanna pay my plane ticket?seriously though, andrew has some really interesting ideas with where his system will go. they guy's knowledge of this stuff is borderline scary.
carlo
Don't know about paying for the ticket, but you're welcome to come and visit. I have a bunch of friends down in the LA area that I visit every so often. Maybe you can show me the good stores down there sometime.Andrew's system is pretty nice, and should be even better now that he's got the bigger place.
Now, if he'd just stop shorting cables and blowing up his amps...
-Jon
Hey, I resent that :)How can one ever learn without taking some risks? heehee
I'm flattered by Carlo's comment, though. Not worthy. =P
Cheers,
Andrew
What about us?
