I am looking for a new or used amp and currently own a CJ Sonograph SA400. I have read reviews on alot of the amps I am considering but would like some honest opinions please. The amps I am considering:Bryston 4BST, McCormick DNA125, Sim Audio W3, Mark Levinson 27.5(newer older model). I know the Levinson is an older model but is it as good or better than the current line of amps listed above?
The rest of my system is:
Tyler Acoustics reference monitors
Morrison ELAD preamp
Audio Refinement CD CompleteSam

Sam,
I'll be very interested in what you find. I've heard the Bryston with two or three speakers: I think that it's very good, neutral, reliable, and quiet; however, compared with some more expensive amp.s, I found it a little dry and reticent. I have the Tyler Acoustics Reference System and an ELAD and a Rega Planet. I've tried the ATI AT-1502, EDGE M-6, and a Llano S200. I'm using the Llano now; it's noisier than the Bryston, but I find it detailed, warm, and musical. I haven't used the Bryston with the Tylers, but I'd expect it to be
a little cooler. The EDGE and the Llano both provide a much bigger
and especially deeper soundstage than some of the other amp.s that
I've heard. What do you feel are the shortcomings of the Sonographe?
All three of your choices sound pretty good. Currently, I'm interested in hearing the Marsh and the new PS Audio.Good luck,
Jan
The Sim Audio W3, within its power limitations, is the sweetest, smoothest, most natural sounding of your listed choices. Regards, Jerry O.
My vote goes for the McCormack; I'm using one with a Musical Design pre amp and Mirage OM 8s. I'm very pleased.
Can't speak to the other choices, however I'm currently using
a Levinson 27.5. I've owned many other amps, and I think within
its power range, it is wonderful. Solid well-defined bass,
spacious soundstaging, three-dimensionality, excellent transient
response, warm midrange. It's one of my favorites. Check the
