I use this primarily as a transport. It rocks as a transport; easily surpassing anything under $1k. It is built like a tank, has defeatable upsampling, and makes a killer DVD V player even though it lacks component video outputs. I use a lot of Netflix DVD's and this is the only player I have found that can track defective DVD's. I see that JA at Sphile uses one as his transport too.I bought mine as a demo for $250; they sell all day long used for about $200 or less. Grab one; you'll never look back.
As a CDP, it is dull and lifeless, even with upsampling. As a DVD A player, it sounds pretty decent, bettering the Redbook sound running through my outboard MENSA DAC. I have tested it as a transport against Marantz, Sony ES, and even the Shanling, and it kills them for the price.

Follow Ups:
I have one, bought it new from J&R for under $400...it had just been trashed in a Stereophile review. I think that you mean it does not output progressive scan don't you? It does have component video outputs.I had never used mine for anything but movies and a very few Dvd-audio disc's until about three weeks ago, at that time I had just sold my Sony XA777es to help finance a pair of speakers and needed to use the Dvd A-10 as a cd player.
Well, I hooked the digital out into my Sunfire theatergrand II, this was the first time I had used it as a Dac also.
I was very suprised at how good this setup sounded, I don't know if the Sunfire is just " THAT GOOD " or if I just got lucky with the right combo ( I also sold my Bent TVC to help finance the new speakers) I will replace this setup when finance's permit with another good Sacd player, but until then I'll be more than happy with this arangement.
You will find that the A10 is better as a player if you remove the 4 steel plates bolted at the bottom. Far from suppressing resonance, these seem to be reponsible for the 'inoffensive' sonic signature. The digital output is ok but nothing special, and the auto shutoff is extremely annoying. The transport mechanism is average and screwed on with ordinary moulded plastic supports.I have taken the unit completely apart and pooged it for 24/192 replay.
