I looked at a $750 Panasonic and $950 Technics DVD-A player yesterday and almost brought one home to check out as a replacement for the Sony DVD player I use for music and movies. I only have Pro-Logic and listen to 2-channel exclusively for music. Is a DVD-A like either of these a good idea? Will it improve the sound of regular CDs? Will movies look and/or sound better? How much DVD-A software is there? Is it worth it if you do not have a 5.1 system? What about SACD?
Thanks a lot for any advice...
If you only have prologic, I am guessing that you do not have a 6 channel pass=thru for hooking a dvd-a player up. Most people do not. Only a few recievers and preamps on the market do. There is almost no software. It is so early in the game that I would not buy one. Have you ever seen a first generation product that did not drop drastically in price? I have not heard DVD-A but have heard recording made at 24/96 which are exceptional however that do not have the watermark copy protection that DVD-A uses so I do not know if they will sound the same. I would say that you should buy when you see enough of your favorite artist on DVD-A recordings to justify the purchase.
