I am interested by the NAD S500 AND Rotel RCD-991 : how would you rate them as CD-Players ? As transports ? Does somebody has technical informations about the mechanism / digital circuits of the NAD S500 ?
Thanks to help,Yves Simon
I compared two of them in the shop, in summary, the NAD is a warming sounding player, but a bit colored and the details and clarity is not as good as Rotel. The Rotel, if correctly run in for ~300 hours, is a VERY netural player, so netural that it just disappear in your system.
It is not harsh, not warm, not bright ... just natural. It is very detailed and "liquid", and the dymanic and bass is excellent, and it doesn't sound "digital" at all.
So I bought the Rotel at the end of the day. I now have it for more than 3 months now, can't live without it anymore ....
But do let it run it first .....

I've had the NAD for a little over a year now and I really enjoy it. I had some problems with it reading CD's also, but that problem seems to have disappeared. This has happened about five times in the year that I've had it. I simply opened the drawer, re-inserted the CD, and it was fine.- Charlie
Hi,I remember you were inquiring about these CDPs awhile back?
I had both CDPs at home for a few weeks. I actually bought the S500 but returned it as it had problems reading some CDs. The RCD991 was a piece the dealer leant me as I waiting delivery of my new Naim CDP.My impressions of the S500 are in the reviews section.
What is the rest of your system? It doesn't seem to be listed under inmate systems...
In my system I found the Rotel sounding very harshly tinny and digital in a mid 80's sorta way. Interestingly, the Rotel unit was Brian Inouye's (line conditioner manufacturer)CDP that he had traded in. He didn't like it either. I don't doubt that we simply had the wrong system for the Rotel CDP. The NAD is definately more "system friendly".
Cheers,

Hi Mike,I just read your review. Very interesting, thanks. What is puzzling is that many reviews from users are 180° different from each other !
But you had the Rotel and the Nad at home, in the same system, and I will trust you. Will probably buy a NAD S500, but I am affraid by the tracking problem.
I posted my system in Audioasylum, if you are intersted. I always appreciate comments.
Regards,Yves
<> Yeah, in the end it all comes down to how the thing sound in your room, with your music, to your ears.
Is it possible to borrow the units for a few days to try them out?
