Is it a waste of money to go for the 24-bit remaster when I have a DAC of only 20-bit resolution? Or it still sounds better than the 20-bit remaster?I've heard that using those 20-bit resolution enhancement boxes on a 16-bit DAC will still improve the sound. Is it true?
ALL audio CDs are 16-bit regardless of the resolution of the mastering equipment. ALL audio CDs are 16-bit regardless of the resolution of your DAC.End of story.

Sorry Ben, I misinterpreted your question (or probably just didn't read it well enough) and so my answer did not really apply. I thought you were asking about compatibility between 24-bit mastered CDs and a 20-bit resolution player. Rodney and TMT are correct, higher resolution can be encoded in the 16 bits. It would be difficult to determine whether the 20-bit or 24-bit mastering would sound better as there are so many other variables.Dave
Actually , you can get a percived 19 bit resolution on CD by using tools such as dither , noise shaping and pre-emphasis.
A lot of audiophile CD's are mastered like this.

All audio CDs *are* 16-bit. However, the 24/96 remasters "downsampled" to 44.1/16 usually sounds much better than the stuff released when CDs first came. If nothing else, you get the advantage of 20 years of experience with trying to tame digital. I have some Verve 24/96 remasters that I like a lot.
