Like a time bomb!! Actually, it sounds like a minor ticking noise coming out of my Sony transport only when I play SACD materials and it's audible from about 2ft out. The noise appears gone when I play the same scad (hybrid) in regular cd mode. Otherwise the player seems to perform fine in both sacd or redbook mode. I have had mine about 9 months and I've hardly played sacd materials. IS this the sign of problem to come or is it normal?
Follow Ups:
What ticks in your machine is the same thing that ticks in most DVD players. A laser assy step motor. Why does it ticks? Because it is new technology and they think if you are stupid enough to fall for it, you probably won't mind this ticking.
There is no way for consumer to fix this. It is made to be like this. If your machine was not doing this before, then it is either dirty or needs a little adjustment.
If your 777 connected to a PS Audio Power Plant with Multiwave, that might be the problem. Mine "ticks" on the Multiwave SS settings (and other 777/SCD-1 users have reported the same phenomenon), but not on the PS2 setting.--Jim
Jim-Mine is plugged in the PS300 with multiwave and at first I thought that was the problem but when I switched the ps300 into single Sin(wave) at 60hz setting and the problem still persists. The noise you were refering to is the transformer's mechanical ping noise and it's most noticable around the SS1 or SS4 setting for many electronic components, I recalled I had this noise problem when I had my SCD1 player a year ago and I emailed Paul of PSAudio and he confirmed that came from the Sony's transformer. Interestingly enough, the tick noise I was refering to is totally gone when I switched to regular cd mode of the same software. Try this in your Sony and let me know what you find. Thanks
Could be the bearing settling in or showing some irregular signs, as you said you haven't run SACDs too often. I might try running it on SACD for a stretch. At this point, running it 24/7 ain't going to hurt. There could be a lot of reasons why it's making the tick while spinning faster and maybe, just maybe, it stops after some major use.Chris
On mine, the MW SS tick-buzz remains in the CD mode (and in the separate DAC I have connected to the P300), so it's not the same problem. (And putting the P300 in the PS2 setting, as Paul had originally suggested to me, corrects it for both units.)If it's SACD-specific, I assume you've checked all your SACD disc surfaces to ensure that they're squeaky clean. As you're probably aware, the SACD layer is far more sensitive (in terms of "letting you know about it" audibly) to dust, fingerprint, and other contamination than the Red Book layer.

Wow!! I would be rather ticked to say the least to spend pretty significant dollars on these players when they don't even seem to work as good as my 10 year old Pioneer. New technology but thanks, I'll wait for the second generation. This confirms my opinion on the "bargain bin" parts that went into these players. A noise would be fine if it was confined to a few players but not that many players have been sold.Everyone talks about the build quality cause they're heavy. I've seen some pretty high end CD players and yes they are heavy but not like the tank porportions of these SACD's. Glad you like the sound.... when they play properly. Thanks for being a SACD guinea pig!!
Hi Rick: I've had a Sony SCD-777ES for 6 Months & have used it approx 3 Hrs a day with no problem. On the contrary it sounds better now than when I boughtit. The units in question seem to be used with devices that change the voltage and/or frequency from the standard 120v/60hz that this player was designed to operate on. Use such devices at your own risk! It is my belief that such devices shorten the life span of the equipment that was designed for standard household voltage/frequency. A good line conditioner that maintains clean 120v/60hz power with surge protection should be all that's necessary to properly power a high end audio system. Regards, HiFi Guy.
Thanks for the feedback, I guess I am a little skeptical of all the SACD boosterism without much critical discussion of the problems encountered with the 1st generation machines. Cheers!
I haven't had any problems with 3 different 777s!
