In Reply to: RE: AQ finally updated the Dragonfly - MQA is here! posted by RJeff on May 18, 2017 at 08:04:31
Yes but...
I was talking with AQ today at High End Munich. It turns out that MQA decoding is only available if another processor does the first unfolding (to 24/96). As that software is only available on desktop apps ( e.g. Tidal, Audiovarna) then portable MQA via the Dragonfly seems not possible. Which is odd logic as I guess that many (most ?) Dragonfly users are portable users connecting it to phone or tablet. I also think that currently the majority of hi-rez is 24/96 being a common recording standard.
The Dragonfly will then unfold higher data rates and will unlock the DAC to process up to 24/768.
Follow Ups:
Right. You have to leave MQA Passthrough unchecked on Tidal. The first unfolding takes place in the desktop app.
I use mine with my Mac at work (AudioEngine 2s on my desk - I'm fortunate to have a private "office" (it's really a large closet) for my tech work) and for fun occasionally with my main rig at home.
Honestly, the DAC on my LG V20 sounds damn good all by itself; I did not find the SQ improved using a USB OTG cable.
So I'm happy to have some sort of MQA now; I'll be comparing it to a Meridian Explorer 2 soon.

I'm listening right now on my iMac. I first turned pass-through on, and my MIDI setup showed 24/48. I then turned it back off and it now shows 24/96. I'm listening to Eric Bibb on Tidal masters. I'm surprised AQ didn't put up some instructions for the best way to configure this for Tidal, considering that's most people's source.I want to play through my main system now, but that requires some setup again. I'm traveling tomorrow so I don't want to pull out the MB Air.
This Eric Bibb album on masters is one of my faves lately. It sounds really good at hi-res. Another one is Christine and the Queens. A poppy French/English group with very deep bass.
And I use mine at home, at work, and in the subway. That's why I like it, I can take it everywhere.

The way you described Christine and the Queens made me think that my girlfriend would really enjoy her/them. I just put on the self-titled album ... and sure enough! Thanks for the recommendation :)
anything to keep the wife/girlfriend happy... We've got to keep them interested in our hobby.
Maybe I'll put that back on after a listen to Greg Allman. RIP.
