Try getting a used unit on eBay......
People who compare recent products to the first players of the 1980s and early 1990s are often shocked over how good the vintage units sound......
Follow Ups:
I've generally had BAD experiences buying used electronics on e-bay.
Too many e-bay sellers are pawning off defective units, on an unsuspecting public.

Here's a Magnavox CDB-460 eBay listing at a price that is low enough to take a chance on.

Thanks for the heads up Duster, it is appreciated!

$300 is a tough audiophile price point. Here's a moderate-cost level option to consider:https://www.musicdirect.com/disc-player/nad-c-516bee-cd-player
This is a wildcard to consider, that may leave some cash room for cabling and vibration control footers:

Even though the newer NAD spinners are made in china, still, not a bad sounding player (BEE series).
