Did I spend $9 for junk? Will I get good results from my schiit bifrost with this budget cable? I know there are more expensive cables out there but I figured I'd start cheap and work my way up, just to get some experience. The DAC arrives tomorrow. Also, does length of toslink cable matter in terms of SQ?

You Bifrost should sound just fine with the HOSA Toslink. I have both a fancy Silflex Glass toslink and a $3 ebay Toslink and both sound just fine with the Bifrost. Toslinks are a real toss up - apparently they can be done wrong but there are few ways to predict it. Example: about 10 years ago Kimber, of all people, came out with a $100 Toslink that was totally trashed by reviewers on both sides of the Atlantic. They had to pull the product. So - it's possible to do Toslink poorly but, most Toslinks, at any price, will probably be fine. I only own a fancy glass Toslink out of insecurity. As I wrote, my $3 ebay Toslink sounds just as good. I think there's an element of luck here.
Also - nothing wrong with HOSA products. I've had a few of their ofc copper interconnects and they sound fine. There's a first rate Gainclone amp manufacturer in Ohio that sells HOSA as their preferred cable!

I've had my Bifrost for about 5 days now, I put it in the TV audio chain to burn it in for a while. I'm using a 3-foot toslink cable from Blue Jeans Cable.
What I found so far, the DAC does not fundamentally change the sound quality. Using it with my Squeezebox / Stax headphones, the headphones still sound thin and bass-shy. Putting it in the TV system, the system sounds about the same as when driven by the TV analog outputs (and that sounded pretty good). I will allow it to burn in for another couple of weeks on the TV and evaluate it again.
Have no idea - I haven't found as big differences between TOSLINK as I see from SPDIF in my experience. I have found the length (1.5m+ tends to work the best for me) and number of fiber connections to be far more critical (generally a TOSLINK cable has only 2 interconnections).
