I own the Modwright Platinum Sony 999 and have had the Ayre CX7e in my system (for a few weeks). Both are excellent players but the Modwright Sony is superior in resolution, imaging and tonal quality. The Ayre was better in the bass but my Sony doesn't have the clock upgrade which apparently remedies that, and adds soundstage and other improvements as well.
I haven't heard the other players.

I see that you had an eXemplar denon 2900. Can you please compare for me what differences you heard?
The Exemplar Denon 2900 and Modwright Sony 999 are at the same level: IMO it comes down to system matching.
The former is warmer, has better "held" notes and trailing transients, with a more blended (coherent) soundstage.
The latter is more neutral, has better (sharper) leading transients, more focused imaging and a deeper soundstage.
As I said previously my Modwright doesn't have the clock upgrade. I bought the Denon used and haven't opened it yet so I don't know if it has a clock upgrade, although I suspect not.
Thanks for your response. Please keep me posted once you have the eXemplar out of the box if you do any more direct comparisons.
