I have not heard the others but the Modwright platinum 999es is fantastic even without the clock. A player that finally sounds right!
What other equipment do you have?
I am running Nuforce monoblocks to Newform Research R645's with external crossovers.
I own the Modwright Platinum Sony 999 and have had the Ayre CX7e in my system (for a few weeks). Both are excellent players but the Modwright Sony is superior in resolution, imaging and tonal quality. The Ayre was better in the bass but my Sony doesn't have the clock upgrade which apparently remedies that, and adds soundstage and other improvements as well.
I haven't heard the other players.
I see that you had an eXemplar denon 2900. Can you please compare for me what differences you heard?
The Exemplar Denon 2900 and Modwright Sony 999 are at the same level: IMO it comes down to system matching.
The former is warmer, has better "held" notes and trailing transients, with a more blended (coherent) soundstage.
The latter is more neutral, has better (sharper) leading transients, more focused imaging and a deeper soundstage.
As I said previously my Modwright doesn't have the clock upgrade. I bought the Denon used and haven't opened it yet so I don't know if it has a clock upgrade, although I suspect not.
Thanks for your response. Please keep me posted once you have the eXemplar out of the box if you do any more direct comparisons.
I love my maxed out Modwright Sony 999. The notable feature of the Modwright is the liquid ease of the total presentation. There is no digital or electronic signature whatsoever. Also the massive analog section power supply (over 10 lbs.-many power amps have smaller PSs) means the bass power and slam is unrivalled in my experience.
Also- looking inside at the parts quality and workmanship- I think it unlikely anyone manufacturing a machine form scratch can offer the quality that Dan does for the $, because the cabinet, mechanical and most of the digital work had been done by the OEM, at high volume pricing.
After using > 20 digital front ends, I know this is the last I'll use for a very long time. It's that much better than the others I've heard. I know the others have a great reputations as well. Good luck!
I have the Sony Modwright 999ES Signature Truth mods Gold Level(had Dan make me a braided umbilical using cryoed Jena Labs 18 awg rather than the Revelations Audio umbilical that makes the mod Platinum) Can you send me your email address at efoster_9@yahoo.com? I want to ask you about tube rolling, power cords etc.
Alex Peychev's mods match this person just fine. He uses a huge power supply and fantastic parts.
