'a company must have a distribution network of no fewer than five US dealers'
'We have reviewed merchandise that's only available via mail order, but we still try to ascertain that the firms are really in business: They must offer a satisfaction/money-back guarantee; they must advertise nationally it doesn't have to be in Stereophile); and we try to listen for a "buzz"—if audiophiles are interested and talking about this company/product, we should report on it. Then, case by case, we decide; in and of itself, selling direct does not ensure exemption from the Five-Dealer Rule'
'We also look for a "mature" product'
meh
Follow Ups:
I was just wondering if their policy changed enough to review products from small one man shops like Don Sachs and Aric Audio. Products from both companies (and other small shops) are owned and rec'd by a number of inmates here as well on A'gon. Just curious 'cause when I was a subscriber I felt their policy was too exclusionary and treated their readers like children unable to make an adult decision about buying gear from a small shop that didn't have 5 dealers. Word always gets out about good stuff via other avenues though.
'just wondering if their policy changed'
good question, I can't find any references to any updated / current policy
and I've 'done the work' so ... his reply to you is negative marketing 101
K. Rubinson: 'If I knew it off the top of my head, I would be happy to tell you' ... that's ridiculous, he's on staff, a representative! a smug, snarky reply? very off-putting from someone repping a magazine
little wonder that I stopped subscribing years ago
maybe he'll post a rejoinder with another smug snarky remark if we're 'lucky' ... *pffft*
best regards,
Sounds like gaslighting to me. Those antiquated rules were good 12 years ago but with most of the local audio stores closed, it makes no sense.
"I've always been mad, I know I've been mad, like the
most of us...very hard to explain why you're mad, even if you're not mad..."
Tough crowd. I am a contributing editor with Stereophile and not an employee. I come to this forum as an individual, not a representative, but I do try to help as far as I am able. The initial issue was why AVA stuff has not been reviewed recently and I do not know why. Next, someone posited "Because they're not sold in stores?" and I do know that is not the reason. I (and others) have reviewed products that are sold directly, so I said that it is not current policy to generically exclude them.
I think the tone changed with the next question, to which I replied "Ask the Editor."
I am not an official spokesman for the magazine and I am cautious about making unauthorized statements of policy. It is, also, not my job to research information for anyone who asks. My position is that if one wants an "official" statement, one should ask the Editor (who makes the decisions). There is a website for that.
This is not an apology but I am sorry this thread has gone off the rail because the OP asked a valid question.

well, I'm not in any unofficial position to accept a non-apology but you might inquire indirectly to RickW who doesn't set any non editorial policy as far as I've not been informed
or something
be well,
