Chris Connaker at Computer Audiophile is reporting that Charles Hansen
of Ayre passed away yesterday. RIP
Follow Ups:
One of the great names in audio. It's hard to imagine that he's gone.
I think it would be great if the folks who moderate/manage this forum could archive all of Charley's posts over the years in one place. I fully realize that won't happen on the basis that it is not difficult to go to the poster's name and find all past posts-but in tribute of such a great source of information...
While it's not widely known, we do have a place at the bottom the the Asylum Support page that honors those that have passed on. I just updated it to sadly include Charley. A click on his name will go to his profile page with a link to his posts

Thank you.
I will greatly miss his musings on this website, on a different audio forum, and on YouTube.
I never met him in person, but somehow late last year we had a flurry of correspondence about the challenges we deal with in life. He was fighting to overcome the difficulties he faced daily due to his debilitating accident caused by a reckless motorcyclist.
It hurts to think he is gone, but there is some comfort in knowing he is no longer in any pain.
Take care, Charlie.
Very sad news. Charlie was a great designer and a great poster on this forum. He spoke many truths. He will be missed.
Charles was very generous with his advice and knowledge on AA for a long time. I'll miss his posts here and on other AA forums. Wish I'd been able to hang with him and have a few beers. Seemed like a great guy. R.I.P.
This is terrible news - he was definitely one of the best posters on any forum that I have encountered. I wish I had met him in person.
You have to admire anyone who enters the "specialist audio" business and does it successfully for 25 years. Persistence, vision, integrity, guts . . . and the guy even took the time to hang out with the Inmates and be a little crazy with them!
Surely he will be missed around here, among many other places.
Condolences to his family, colleagues and friends.
My condolences to his family What a great loss of a great human. He had the rare ability to explain the most complex concepts into language easily understood. In fact I had come here today to read his latest posting. Now I realize it can end at any moment.
I count myself blessed to have had a number of E-mail exchanges with Charley over the years.
Not only was he passionate, honest, open, and extremely knowledgeable; this man truly loved music and thought broadly beyond just his profession. He thought deeply on a spiritual level and desired to influence others in an enduring way...
He will be missed.
RIP Charley.

Sad news. I've enjoyed learning things from him here on the forum.
See ya. Dave
Wow , this is devastating , RIP Charles ....
Terribly sad news. Me. Hansen was an articulate and passionate voice here. I will miss his live greatly.
Charles and I fought and we got along, too. I think he knew I respected him for the things he'd accomplished in his life. I think we'll all miss him. I know I will.

RIP Charles. Another of the good guys is gone.

I am totally gutted. I loved Charley based upon what I read about him, what I read about his products, and what I read from the man himself here in this forum. I always thought it sort of surprising that he chose this forum on this Board to vent about so many things he found abhorrent in the industry. Priceless to me was a post about two or three months ago when I asked-here-if he was willing to name names of people in the industry who had taken credit for others' work-which he had alluded to. Much to my surprise, he named names and explained some of the background.
As someone else noted, perhaps his flurry of unabashed comments lately were related to his knowledge of how his health was-an industry veteran version of David Bowie recording a near-posthumous album while keeping his condition totally secret. I know that JA is a consummate gentleman and is probably 10x more gutted than I am.
I always opened and read Charles' many posts. As a manufacturer of very fine products, I gave much weight to his opinions on this passion of reproduced music that we share. I will miss his voice very much, and wish to offer my deepest condolences to those who were personally close to him.
wow...just last week he was replying to some of my post's here on AA. This is a real shocker :(

...seems like he was posting here a day or two ago.
He will be missed.
Charley will really be missed. What a sad day for us all.

Mr. Hansen was a very interesting person, clearly an excellent engineer, and I enjoyed reading his posts very much. One of the most interesting posters on AA.
Strange, but I thought he had been making a flurry of posts in the past month or so, and it may explain why he wasn't concerned with muddying the waters in regard to Stereophile. The sediment will sink back to the bottom soon enough.
I had two childhood friends who suffered spinal cord injuries. One killed himself and the other didn't.
RIP Charles Hansen
Big speakers and little amps blew my mind!
Godspeed Mr. Hansen. We have way too many me-to followers around, it is a tragedy to lose an independent spirit like Charles Hansen.

Its not mentioned on the Ayre website.

We will have something official on the site soon. Today we focused on letting those close to Charley know, as finding out through an email or forum post would not have done them the justice deserved; and then releasing the public statements on the forum and through our email list. I'm quite certain we forgot to contact more people than we remembered, as the list of people who knew and loved Charley was very long.
In the meantime, we did send out an official mailing that you can see in the below link, and we have a post on our Facebook page as well with the same content, but with a place for people to respond and share stories, etc. just as they can here.
Charley's loss was sudden and unexpected for all, including Charley. I'm glad that he had a chance to post regularly near the end, even when some discussions became somewhat heated. I do know that even in the heat of the moment, Charley loved and cared for those that share the same passion as he.
Best,
Ryan Berry
Shocking! Condolences to our audio community.
20 years ago Wes Phillips interviewed Charles. It is good and it is autobiographical.
I am greatly shocked and more saddened. His reputation was such that I always looked out for his posts and found in most of them nuggets of information and experience. He could be outspoken but I came to realize it was driven by audio passion and not out of maliciousness. I truly hope Ayre can and will continue and flourish. AA will continue too, but it will be diminished without him.

He sent me an email a while back
Hadn't replied yet
I guess never now
Bill Leebens has just posted on Facebook:
> is stunned to hear of the death of Charley Hansen at Ayre Acoustics.
> Charley was a true original, pugnacious, holding strong principles and even stronger opinions.
> He was also a fanatical follower of Shawn Colvin, and I was happy to have been able to get him > signed albums and an inscribed copy of Shawn's autobio.
> It's a tough month for the audio world, coming on the recent loss of Arnie Nudell.
> RIP, my friend.
Pretty shocking and a reminder that we should be kinder to each other for no man knows for whom the bell tolls.
Rest in Peace Charlie. You'll be missed, a lot.

I am devastated by Charley's passing. He was a wonderful guy and a very talented designer. He will be missed.
Yeah...I am taken aback!! wow
My condolences to family and friends
very say day.
R.I.P.
I will certainly miss our conversations especially the ones about digital theory. I consider it an honor to have known him and that he took the time he did to share his knowledge with me.
is this a joke?, the man has been posting here very recently??!!
Another good guy is gone. Does anyone know how old he was when he passed?
Very sad to hear this news, my warm regards to his family and those who loved him.
I had a few conversations with him here, I know he had it pretty hard with his situation being paralyzed from what I've understood from his posts.
He is in a better place, I am with him in my thoughts. R.I.P.
He must have been 60, give or take. I believe it was in 2007 that he
suffered 10 broken vertebrae and a crushed spinal cord. The crash
with a reckless driver left him paralyzed from the chest down.
His passing is a giant loss. Condolences to the family.

I think of the recent arguments I had with him and I now regret them. I will miss him. Maybe I will try to be a nicer person
Alan
But curiously, his outspokenness and forthrightness were part of his charm. It was easy to disagree with his behavior and some of what he said, but his passion and honesty were refreshing at the same time, and his love of audio and knowledge of engineering were apparent. Someone I couldn't help liking and respecting, even when I thought he was being unfair.

I know what you mean. I feel the same.

You are fine.
Charles posted about CIA Brainwashing, Jason Bourne Movies,
and had a Major Burr in his Bonnet over MQA.
Stress and Paranoia aren't your friends.
Charles posted about any number of things trying to warn the sheople that there's more than meets the eye regarding sensitive subject matters. Just like with MQA.
Charles seemed a bit limited in his conspiratorial thinking but he was certainly on the right track and much further along than most of us.
I remember being rather pleased in recent months to see him so freely share what he thought was true as if to educate us on things we would never hear from Mainstream Media - even though it most likely wouldn't be well-received by the masses.
I only read the full brunt of his accident today and I'm sure the last 10 years were a real struggle for him and his family.
In this day and age, there aren't many willing to compromise their reputation for what they know to be true. And that's one of the main differences between image and character.
From what I could tell in the past few months, Charles was a man of integrity with a passion for others.
My prayers to his family.
