Hi,
I just got my new July Stereophile. Inside is a review of a turntable called the Analogue Works Zero. The review was by Herb Reichert. I had a pen in hand and circled some of Herbs comments.
Under (Motor axioms) I circled this comment..I thought belt drives were rinky-dinky, and that any DIY guy could build one. Well?......
Compared with the Linn LP-12 the Zero delivered a noticeably different quality of silence?....What are the qualities of silence. Is it something like that tree falling in the woods question?
The Zero made the Planar 3 sound brash and the Scout Jr. inattentive.
Herb Reicherts review was very comprehensive but all I could do to make this review useful was to scratch off my list 3 great turntables, 2 in the same price range, off my wish list and that Stereophile has always held in high esteem.
Before I nit pick any more maybe some one out there can explain to me how to understand Herbs reviews.
Thanks alot and still love the mag but for slower guys like me maybe an article on how to understand a review might help the less informed into the Hi-fi hobby.....Mark Korda

I won't vouch for him, but I've made the PLX-100 sound very good here at home.

Maybe this will help. Or not.
...don't make any buying choices based on his reviews. He over-reacts, and a few months later will be telling you about the flaws in the component he had gushed over based on comparison with his latest crush.
Mr Reichert writes about the "experience" of listening to a component. How does it make him feel, what does it inspire him to listen too, where does it direct his attention. I find that more interesting than a basic regurgitation of the manufacturer's ad speak and basic specs, something that many reviewers essentially copy and paste to fill up a review. I think he adds an additional level to the banter in Stereophile, they need him!
I agree with all that, but he does tend to go overboard in his praise for some components, and as you point out, he does this in his own unique way. Which I also appreciate, and it's how I evaluate components of my own. But months later when another component is under review, he backtracks or modifies his previous opinion. Nothing wrong with that, but readers just need to understand this, otherwise they might be tempted to purchase a component based on Herb's first impressions.
Just a note that in Herb's recent review of the Audioquest Night Owl closed-back headphones he claimed that he wore them while riding his bike around. Don't try this at home.

Herb gushes. I take everything he says with a salt mine.

The Flowery Part...
IMHO, Herbert's ramblings in the July Stereophile were a bit disjointed and confusing.
So he cut down on the "purple prose" and upped the ante with unicorns and fairy dust? No longer worth reading!
Cheers,
SB
hopefully they are better at building them than naming them.
Seems too oxymoronic that name.

He loves the one he's with.
(And gets a little creepy)
The sound was like a gypsy dancer gyrating her hips with hot salsa on her tongue. So much so, the speaker and I started making love.

Hi,
JT, I remember that quote you added by Herb Reichert. That was good and the rest of you made me laugh too. It's nice to know that some people feel the same way. It's like a free sanity check....take care...Mark K

The audio reviewers have discovered it long time ago...
...as one exerts mental effort trying to figure out what he's really saying. I found this writing style "interesting" when I first encountered it. Less interesting now.
