Hi,I am directly comparing the Hot Boxes (nickel/20amp) with the ExactPower EP15A (I know price wise they aren't in the same ballaprk).
I need to get some funds to upgrade other parts of my system, so I decided to try the Hot Boxes since I enjoy Chris' Flavor 4 cords on my amps.
So far (connecting the Hot Boxes to standard lines - dedicated lines are going in as I type) I have noticed an increase in transparency and detail, but less weight and heft to the bass. Until I put the ExactPower back in, I am not sure if the Hot Boxes are restricitng the bass or if the ExactPower was possiblt emphasizing it.
I am also hoping that the Hot Boxes will smooth out a bit as they might have a little too much detail right now.
Chris told me that they would improve greatly with the dedicated lines and with breakin (about 200 hrs or so).
I am running my two amps and two subs on one Hot Box and dac, transport, preamp, tt on the other.
I will post a full review once I get more flying time with the units.
BTW, Chris is fantastic to deal with and responds amazingly quickly - A+ customer service.
Follow Ups:
How’s that Persang/Soundstring comparison going? I ended up buying the new 30” pair of Persang IC’s even though they cost much more than I’d originally intended to spend.I recently had the opportunity to compare Ric Cummins’ cables to a borrowed pair of Valhalla’s, and I was surprised to discover that I preferred the Jaden Sig’s, and the Persang beat them both. For my tastes, the Valhalla’s were amazingly detailed (somewhat etched), but a little too hard, forward, and even slightly mechanical. I was expecting them to be the best IC’s known to man, given their reputation, but they struck me as slightly too hi-fi - more head than heart. I’m looking forward to hearing your impressions of the Persang and the Soundstrings.
Back on topic: In my system, the Hot Box tightens up the bass focus without diminishing its weight at all, but I haven’t tried it with my amp, which is plugged straight into the wall via an Acme outlet. I asked Chris about a different “flavor” Hot Box – maybe a flavor 2 cord, since I’m using it primarily for source components, but he said the modded flavor 4 was the ticket regardless of what it’s feeding.
I have to ask you the same question I asked the other poster. Did you get the cap upgrade? What do you think about it?
Sorry, missed that...Yes, these have the upgraded caps.
Since I haven't heard the non-upgraded version I don't have anything to compare it to.
BTW, HUGE improvment when I connected them to my new 20 amp dedicated lines. :-)
If you don't mind telling me, how much does it cost to have someone install a dedicated line?
It should run around $100 a line, but depends on where you live.I live just outside of NYC so it might be more expensive than other areas.
Probably the best money I have spent on my system.
