I rarely post here, but, found my recent revelation a bit eye opening/surprising.
I have been designing very good Open Baffle speaker systems for seven years. The last five years have been chronicled on "6moons" thanks to Srajan Eban's desire to think outside of the box as an Audio Magazine Editor. We don't always see eye to eye but it is mostly healthy discourse where I generally learn a thing or two.
But, I have a current three way, ON Baffle, OB speaker system that requires tri-amplification and subsequent triple runs of speaker cables.
I have narrowed my speaker cable choices for my Lowther Ticonal PM2MKII or Lowther America Field Coil wide banders and RAAL 140-15D Amorphous Siltech silver/gold transformer wire windings mid-tweeter to the latest Audience AU24e speaker cables.
These cables are absolutely fabulous sounding, period. It may be an advntage to some that they are utterly unobtrusive, but I have my own listening room (Man Cave of sorts, in a techy sort of way)so it's not an issue. I tried and enjoyed many far more expenbsive cables, but, ust could not justify enough if any sonic advantages for the extreme price differences.
But, I stubbornly maintained my DIY cross connected speaker cables for my Altec Alnico 16 Ohm 15" woofers on the bottom of the baffles. After all, I am using a singe huge toroidal 1st order Inductor crossing them at approximately 135 hertz. So why use a more costly pair of speaker cables for such a low crossover into a woofer ( I know, 1st order will allow the Altecs' to actually perform up into the 300 hertz range quite audibly).
Anyway, the "Audience Company" was kind enough to allow me to use a third set of AU24e speaker cables for connection to the Altec 416's during my next official comparative multiple Open Baffle speaker system evaluations.
I expected very little audible change from what is a very good Belden 89259 based cross connected speaker cable (DIY). I meam this cable is VERY good.
However, I was completely dumbfounded! It seems that the three pairs of Au24e speaker cables must Gel in some form of synergistic rythm. It is as if my rather large (24" wide by 57" tall) Open Baffles just completely became an inconsequential part of the music system. They were GONE!
Cohesive music just hung in the air half way above the baflles toward the celling and filled in every space behind, beside and several meters in front of the baffles. But, there was never a hint that the baffles were the origin or source of the sound.
Everything that I had listened to hundreds of times previously was more "Alive" without a hint of some of the previous bite or occassional harshness. It just sounded mesmoisingly REAL.
Who knew that the one "very good cross connected speaker cable" was wreaking such mismatch Havock on the sound of the entire system.
Ok, I know that this is a post that will likely appeal to the very few who bi or tri wire their speakers, but learn from me and DO NOT mix and match speaker cables if at all possible.
As an aside, I have used/tried many, many high to VERY high end speaker cables and have found that NOTHING has done a better sonic job for me than the Au24e speaker cables. The "e" version is absolutely a mandatory feature. I have no idea what the "e" feature actually is but, the regular Au24 speaker cable is not in the vsame league in my experienced opinion.
Also, the AU24e was the 2nd least expensive of the 26 sets of speaker cables (multiple sets due to bi then tri amping) that I lived with. And the thing is that my evaluations had ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with evaluating cables of any kind. This was and still is all about Open Baffle (DIY) speaker designs.
