I'm curious if anyone out there has tried pairing an ARC LS16 or LS25 with Bryston power amps. Good matchup? Characteristics?
Follow Ups:
I had a LS-25II for a year & 1/2 traded up to a Cary SP2002 ya you read that right UP. I did try the SL25 with a 3BST the result was transparent & CLARITY.(A warning your frontend needs to be SMOOOOOTH). I thank a LS16 would be a better match. A have not hard the SST AMPS alltho.Thay say the SST amps are a little smoother. I relly did like the Bryston to. Thats my TWO CENTS..
That's very interesting ... I was also considering the SLP2002 next to the ARC LS16MKII and LS25MKII. Can you provide some details on how they compare?
The 2002 is between LS16 & LS25 in the way it sounds. The tubes make a big dif in the 2002.The 2002 is killer with mullerd gold pin 6922. Allsow if you git a 2002 you need to have the out put gain lowerd to a meadum output with ARC amps.
Thanks for the info. Specifically, I'm looking for both a new preamp and amp to drive my Maggie 1.6s. I need a stereo amp to accommodate other equipment and living space requirements (selling off my Muse 300 monos).I have a Cary 306/200 CD player which I just love, so the 2002 pre makes sense. Preamp must have a cinema bypass and I want to keep everything balanced (I've found there is a sonic improvement using the Cary 306 balanced as opposed to single-ended). Considering ARC 150.2, Bryston 3bsst/4bsst and Bel Canto eVo power amps. The low input impedance of the Brystons represents a challenge for several preamps, including the ARCs.
I use a Cary SLP-98 with Cary 306-100 CDP and SimAudio amp, and have been very pleased with the results. When the 2002 came out, I compared the SLP-98 to the 2002 and STRONGLY preferred the 98. It is better made, sounds way better, and with really useful features like the adjustable input sensitivity (no balanced ins & outs, though). I found the 2002 to be a little bit light-weight (the 98 was much fuller and richer, yet not too dark and chocolatey).
I had a Bryston 4B with an ARC LS3 preamp. It was a good combination, I thought. I replaced the LS3 with an ARC LS25mkII. Suddenly the Bryston was severely lacking. It displayed some treble grain and wasn't as neutral as I would have liked. The LS25 was very revealing of flaws in both source and amplification.Tried some other (more recent) Brystons, ended up with a Levinson amp. The LS25 forced me to upgrade my sources as well. I hate when that happens! :-)

Looks like no one does this.IMO Bryston power amps are ok. The 4BST is not as resolving as some other amps like Musical Fidelity. That said, the 4BSST may be better at this.
The 4BST sounded pretty musical with the MF SS pre I have. Just that last bit of transparency was missing. The SST model will probably give you that transparency.
I have a Music Reference tube preamp and it's pretty musical. Not totally transparent, etc. I'm using it with a Pass Aleph 30 in my bedroom system. I'd be very curious to try a passive pre like the Placette with a 4Bsst amp or the Pass. I'd expect something quite decent and livable.
I had a Bryston 3bst and a AR LS-15 for a short while. I liked the Bryston better with the matching BP-20 preamp. The LS-15 surprisingly caused more listening fatigue, added too much noise, and the volume control wasn't fine enough(yes the tubes were good). The all Bryston setup was easier to listen to and dead quiet, but was just a bit steril. I'm not saying AR stuff is bad, just that in this case it didn't fit with the rest of my system and I liked the Bryston better.
