Any help would be much appreciated. I have an older B&K AVP4090 preamp with remote. The remote does not seem to be working. I have checked the IR signal using my digital camera (on my iphone). It appears as a very very weak signal (with fresh batteries installed).
Question - can any universal remote be programmed to at least get a volume control?
Thanks for any replies.
Follow Ups:
According to the Harmony Remote database the B&K AVP4090 is supported on their universal remotes. Buy any of their remotes, even a used one from ebay, plug it into your computer, go to https://support.myharmony.com/en-us/compatibility, put B&K into the "Manufacturer" box and AVP4090 into the "Model number" box and download the commands to the remote.
Wow! Awesome recommendation! Thank you for taking the time!
If your present remote puts out an IR signal, even a weak one.... You might be able to use it to program a cheap learning remote. See the Amazon Link below. You point your existing remote at the learning remote and it learns the code.
Don't laugh but I have a few of these around the house for simple Volume Up/Down/Mute Input Select. I use these cheapie remotes so I can store away the factory units and keep them in pristine shape for when I sell the gear.
Cheapie Learning Remote, $9 on Amazon:
Great idea! Thank you! I also just recently paid Cary Audio $120 for a fancy full system remote for the volume function of my Cary SLp-05 preamp.
The remote can be a little tricky to program even with a fully functional "source remote". Hopefully there's enough IR light from your existing remote to program the learning remote.
From previous posts, you indicated that you once owned the CAD SLP-05. Were you able to program the "cheapie" remote to work the volume/mute control for the SLP-05?
I owned the SLP-05 a very long time ago but I bought my "cheapie" remotes recently within the past couple years so I never tried them out on the Cary. They work with my Rogue integrated amp, LG TV, and Yamaha integrated amp. Here's another one that I like better - at least in the looks department, but it's pretty large. The round one that I posted earlier is smaller.

Remotes, the biggest bitch in audio. (except Justin Berber)
First of all an older unit the newer universals might not hit. In fact probably won't hit. And B&K, US made ? Fat chance.
I can fix remotes. You might want to try that. You say it has output but is weak ? Well in that case, if you put it right up to the receiver on the unit will it work ? That would be a very good sign.
But if the signal is very weak that indicates a problem, A problem. therefore it is most likely the IRED in it is going bad. I can probably scare one up around here, if I have to order one well, I was thinking about it anyway to have some in stock so you don't have to pay all the shipping.
So, what I'll do is;
You ship it to me. that, if you do it right should be like $7. Possibly less. With US the base insurance is $100. For that you can probbly buy one.
Anyway I get it, either I can find the right IRED around here or order it, either way about $35, maybe $30. Then you will reimburse my shipping back.
If I can't repair it I will just send it back at my expense.
Your call.
Still, repairing a remote is no fun, if you can just get one, have you looked ? I have a guy who can find almost anything. Want me to call him ? He is, I shit you not, in a sleep study, but damn it is almost 3:00.
If you wanna, let me know.
Thank you! I will likely take you up. I'm trying get the unit ready to sell or gift.
