A bi-polar clamp at ±5V is need on the output of the preamp to prevent degrading the diff pairs noise figure when they avalanche at about 7V.
Follow Ups:
Is the diff amp typically DC coupled from the input jack? Or is there a coupling cap? Geez, I've been ruined by 20 years of tube design work.
