on or off? Have a new Primaluna in the house, the Dialogue 4, and the cage off the 4 El34's, 2 12AX7's and 1 12AU7's are warming up the room nicely. This would be great if it was winter but it isn't :)
thanks!
Follow Ups:
You could always install a small Ductless Mini-Split Air Conditioner for the room. They can be very quiet.
Amp will generate the SAME amount of heat no matter what.
Unless some kind of temp sensing circuitry is used, like a Thermistor.
Measure using a Kill-A-Watt meter with and without to satisfy yourself.
Just sitting there, no signal, virtually ALL power used is making heat.
Too much is never enough
I'm sure a lot of cages or ventilated tops could cause some increased heat if the unit is left on for a long time or if the unit is not in a open space where air flow is not impeded. However I doubt that the air flow in the Dialogue series is any difference on or off no matter where the amp is located. What you do get though is tube protection from 'accidents'. I leave mine on all the time, with other amps not so much.
any tube amps that had some sort of cover, I liked to keep them off....as any type of airflow could help and being able to see the tubes glow is always cool .
It's the same heat on or off but I like to keep the amp cooler. So topless it is.
Here in Arizona when the temps start getting around 110+ I like to switch over to a SS amp. And smart comments aside even at those temps an AC isn't going to cut it.
But I hear you. Use a fan to blow some air OUT of the room. Or use a ceiling fan if you have one. The key is circulate the air to other rooms. Best of luck to ya.
Smart comments aside, if your A/C can not keep your house cool because of a tube amp you need a new A/C, REALLY.
I totally agree my A/C can barely cope w/ the heat produced by my monoblocks high powered tube amps, but w/ my medium powered amps it's adequate . Time for me to buy an additional A/C to the room , but I can't for now my vintage sports car is the one I'm spending on at this time .
A/C is mandatory in our country because we're in the tropics .
The jury is still out, but even going from a 50" plasma TV to a much larger and more efficient OLED, it would appear my AC bill is going to drop.
I make full use of the colder rooms at the back of the house to 'cycle' cooler air to the front.
If I thoroughly cool the house off at nite, and close up 1st thing, I can keep the AC off until 3pm or maybe even later.
Too much is never enough
The rest of the house is fine. It's the room the stereo is in. If the ceiling fan is going it's livable. Again the trick is air good circulation in and out of the room.
But when temps start hitting 115 you can get a little irritable even with the fan going.
